Hello Hornets!

March Madness is almost over, but there are plenty of other sports to cleanse your competitive palette. Over the past couple weeks, both men’s and women’s basketball seasons came to an end in the Big Sky Tournament, but men’s and women’s tennis is still going strong with about a month left before their tournaments begin.

The Sacramento State women’s basketball season concluded in the second round of the Big Sky Tournament on Sunday, March 10 after a dominant second half from Northern Arizona sophomore forward Sophie Glancey.

The Hornets entered the tournament as the youngest team in Division I and were able to beat Idaho State in the first round.

After finishing his first year, head coach Aaron Kallhoff thanked freshman forward Summah Hanson and redshirt sophomore guard Benthe Versteeg for the work they put in this season.

“Six wins in our first year, some people will look back at it and be like you guys underachieved,” Kallhoff said. “That’s not even close, we’re building.”

Sacramento State men’s basketball was on the cusp of achieving something that had never been done in program history on Tuesday, March 12.

The Hornets had multiple late-game opportunities to advance to their first-ever Big Sky Championship game, but couldn’t convert and lost 74-71 to Montana State.

“They grew up over the course of the year,” Sac State head coach David Patrick said. “Now they know what it tastes like to win, I’m hopeful we’ll keep these guys together.”

The Sacramento State women’s tennis team won their eighth consecutive dual after beating Weber State 4-3 in their first match of Big Sky Conference play on Saturday, March 16.

The Hornets fell behind in doubles for only the second time during their winning streak but regrouped to win four singles matches.

“It feels great but we really work for it so we expect to win,” Sac State head coach Sophie Breault said. “I think we have a great team and it’s been a great season so far, the hard work pays off.”

The Sacramento State men’s tennis team split their two weekend matchups with a loss against conference opponent Northern Arizona University on Friday, March 15 and a dominating win on Sunday, March 17 against Seattle University to get back on track.

Both opponents put up a difficult fight for the Hornets during the doubles, but the singles were vastly different. The singles against NAU were gritty performances for most of the matchups, but the singles against Seattle U was all Hornets.

“It’s a win, but I would trade this one for the other one,” Sac State men’s tennis head coach Kevin Kurtz said. “I feel like we learned a lot from the NAU match on what to do under pressure.”
