How Responsive Is Government to the Voters?
Once measures become law, implementation is up to the government. Here’s an update on what our government is doing to implement measures voters and legislators have approved.
Youth Vote: In 2020 Oakland voters approved Measure QQ. It empowered the City Council to take steps so 16- and 17-year-olds can vote for Oakland Unified School District board members. LWVO supported that measure and advocates for its implementation. Youth may finally be able to vote this November, although that outcome is not yet assured. Read more…
Campaign Finance Reform: In November 2022, 74% of voters supported Measure W, the Oakland Fair Elections Act. It established, among other reforms, the nation’s second-ever Democracy Dollars program to fund candidates in local elections. LWVO helped develop the initiative and enthusiastically promoted it. While some components of the law are in place, the future of the Democracy Dollars component is unclear. Read more…
Sheriff Oversight: Under AB 1185, County Boards of Supervisors have authority to establish civilian oversight boards for sheriff offices. For two years, the Alameda County BOS has debated proposals to implement AB 1185.
