 Expanded Learning, Community Engagement

Buffalo’s Community Schools:
Empowering Neighborhoods Through Saturday Academies

Each Buffalo Community School hosts 8 Saturday Academies a year (as well as 4 evening events). Academies are an “open house” of sorts, where the schools become bustling hubs of activities for the neighborhoods. Entirely free, Academies provide all attendees breakfast and lunch. The Community Schools teams within each building, consisting of building leads and CBO partners, work together to program these events. They bring engaging, educational, and needed resources to the community’s families.

A few examples of the programming and resources at Academies during '23-'24 SY included engineering with WNY Stem, bike safety and repair with GOBike, healthy cooking classes with F Bites, and free haircuts from local barber Justin Becton.

Brooklyn's P.S. 59:
Removing Barriers and Creating Cultivating Spaces

Striving to meet the interests of a diverse learner population, P.S. 59 provides specially designed spaces for learning and enrichment, such as a Dance Studio, a STEM Lab, and a Fashion Studio. In the Industry Room, students can develop skills that may lead to future careers in Photography, Graphic Design, Content Creation, DJing, Fashion Design, Hairstyling, and Cosmetology.

Removing barriers to learning and providing wraparound services is key to how they support their students. P.S. 59 offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day. They also provide free eye and dental exams, mental health resources, a food pantry, laundry services, and a special Sensory and Gross Motor Skills Center for state-of-the-art PT, OT, and counseling services.

Their support also extends to families, offering connections to ESL and GED courses, including an in-house English Language course.

 Collaborative Leadership

Liberty Central School District:
A Shared Vision and Collaborative Leadership

The Liberty Central School District, located in Sullivan County, is a rural district that serves approximately 1,600 students. With its unique geography, surrounded by mountains and other natural barriers, Liberty is an isolated community with a large population living in poverty. However, these challenges are no match for the district’s leadership team, who champion a district-wide Community Schools approach.

The district builds from its assets, which include a dedicated community and a can-do spirit that runs through every level of district staff. To accomplish the goal of offering programming while remaining fiscally conservative, the district has turned to shared leadership and responsibility with a wide range of leaders and community partners. Working with various community stakeholders including parents, students, government officials, teachers, and others ensures that all perspectives share the vision for community schools and for creating a strategic implementation plan.

   Community of Practice Update:

C/W CS TAC Rural Community Schools CoP

This school year, the Central/Western CS TAC has been hosting a series on the strengths and challenges of Rural Community Schools. The first three sessions focused on:

Participants were able to connect, ask questions, and learn from the panelists, professionals, and each other.

The feedback from participants has been positive, with many reporting that they found the content particularly helpful. In fact, 93% of survey respondents said they "gained new knowledge, tools, or skills as a result of the sessions." Survey respondents said they will "make time to connect with local agencies" and "review some of the websites and resources shared" as a result of these sessions. (Be sure to check out the recordings of the 3 previous sessions on our website!)

We know from our work at the TAC that valuable connections and support are imperative for implementing Community Schools strategies. Therefore, this school year's fourth and final Rural Schools Community of Practice session will be all about your questions, concerns, insights, and inquiries. This session is all about collaboration and discussion based on your Community Schools work. See below and join us!

Rural CS CoP - Session 4:
Connection and Collaboration

May 1st, 9:30-11:30am (via Zoom)

The final session of this year's Community of Practice, focusing on assets and challenges within rural Community Schools, will be a chance to network and discuss relevant issues folks are navigating. The group will reflect on current practices, share helpful resources, and provide meaningful support to colleagues. Participants will be encouraged to share an idea or question related to the work they're doing (e.g., youth engagement, school partnerships, community services) to highlight the amazing insights and experiences in the (virtual) room.

New Resources from the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights

The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (USDOE-OCR) has released four new resources for students with disabilities, which NYSED recently highlighted on its website.

The new resources regarding asthma, diabetes, food allergies, and GERD are available on the USDOE's OCR website. The new Civil Rights Data Collection (CRDC) disability snapshot, and other CRDC data reports and snapshots, are available on the USDOE's CRDC website.

OCR’s new CRDC data snapshot reports that 8.4 million students with disabilities accounted for 17% of the overall public school enrollment in the 2020-21 school year, the most recent school year for which the Department has civil rights data. Three percent (1.6 million) of the overall student enrollment were students with disabilities who received educational aids and services under Section 504 only.

The four new resources address common medical conditions that can be disabilities for purposes of Section 504: asthma, diabetes, food allergies, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). These resources, which are applicable to all levels of education, explain when these medical conditions trigger protections under Section 504, what kind of modifications an educational institution may need to take to avoid unlawful discrimination, and what an institution may need to do to remedy past discrimination.
