Salem Symphonic Winds invites you to embark on a musical journey to the Middle East like never before! On this enchanting afternoon, we’ll celebrate the rich cultures and histories of several regions, all through the universal language of music.

🎵 Program Highlights:

  1. World Premiere: Be among the first to experience the band arrangement of The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám by Alan Hovhaness. This masterpiece, inspired by the poetry of Omar Khayyám, delves into themes of life, death, love, and fate. The fusion of Western and Eastern musical elements creates an exotic and captivating sound.
  2. Accordion Magic: Our virtuoso accordionist, Tommy Thompson, will weave his magic, adding a unique flavor to the performance.
  3. Soprano Serenade: The transcendent soprano and actress, Rebecca Fromherz, will take center stage, enchanting us with her voice. She’ll also perform two opera arias: the Air of Salome from Herodiade by Jules Massenet and an aria from Die Tote Stadt by Erich Wolfgang Korngold.
  4. Diverse Repertoire: From Verdi’s powerful Overture to Nabucco to the iconic Theme from Lawrence of Arabia by Maurice Jarre, our program showcases the richness of Middle Eastern musical traditions. You’ll also enjoy Armenian Dances, Klezmer Classics, Of Blood and Stone: The Pyramids of Giza and more!

Soprano Rebecca Fromherz

Rebecca is a native of Dallas, Oregon. She learned Dance and Acting at the Vienna Konservatorium. Rebecca’s European Professional Resume lists appearances at the famous Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, and outdoor opera festivals in Holland, Germany, Italy, Austria, and Slovakia.  Rebecca is a regular soloist in the Willamette Valley, Portland, and beyond. She will be the featured narrator for The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám and in beautiful opera arias by Massenet and Korngold. 

Accordionist Tommy Thompson

Tommy is a native of Vancouver, Washington, where he began music studies at the age of 4, taking lessons at a local music store on the accordion. He was a member of an accordion orchestra conducted by Eileen Hagen that won a national competition at Carnegie Hall in 1962. He was a member of the Oregon Symphony, performing in the bass section for 35 years. Tommy was the accordion soloist in Piazzolla's Maria de Buenos Aires with Salem Symphonic Winds and Rainbow Dance Theatre in January 2023
