Last Repair Shop Documentary Screening at Hollywood High

Dear friends and partners,

March is off to a great start at LAUSD, starting with an Oscar! The Last Repair Shop, which highlights the amazing employees who maintain the District’s instrument repair shop and the talented students who play those instruments, reminded us all of the importance of arts education. This movie was co-directed by a proud LAUSD Board District 4 alum, and I look forward to visiting the repair shop with my team next week to express our gratitude and support for this type of programming in schools.

March also brought us thousands of beaming faces during Read Across America week, and we celebrate all the amazing women across the course of history this Women’s History Month. That of course includes our Vice President Kamala Harris, who recently visited with some students from Westchester Enriched Sciences Magnet as she touched down at LAX.

The work continues in schools as students turn their eyes towards spring break and then the home stretch to the end of the school year. At the Board level, we continue to discuss how to navigate a gloomier budget season than we’ve seen for many years, while celebrating student success and examining areas for growth.

In gratitude,

Making Caring Common (MCC) is a groundbreaking program created by Harvard University that aims to foster a positive, caring culture of kindness in schools. Designed for grades K-12, MCC is more than curriculum–it nurtures students’ social, emotional, and academic commitments and skills they need to care for people who are different from them, while involving the community including parents and teachers. MCC has made an impactful difference at Third Street Elementary, where they formed a Making Caring Common Student Council composed of students who spearhead “Kindness Mondays” and serve as role models, practicing kindness daily. We’re also thrilled that MCC will be expanding to Fairfax High soon!
