The first phase of the Multi-Actor Partnership (MAP) development took place from 2020-2022 and focused on climate risk in Sri Lanka’s food systems. Through an extensive stakeholder engagement process at local and national level, the work focused on understanding the risk management ecosystem and identifying opportunities to scale up resilience and build on existing mechanisms such as the crop insurance scheme.

Case study on landslide risk, human mobility, and climate-induced loss and damage in Sri Lanka (SLYCAN Trust/National Building Research Organization)

SLYCAN Trust in partnership with (NBRO) has published a primer on the ongoing case study on landslide risk, human mobility, and climate-induced loss and damage in three sites in Bulathkohupitiya DS division, Kegalle district. The study aims to provide a better understanding of the complex relationships between climate and disaster impacts and affected communities, including those that are relocating and those that are opting for in-situ adaptation.

Climate-resilient and sustainable entrepreneurship (SLYCAN Trust/Ministry of Environment)

SLYCAN Trust in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment has undertaken a joint initiative to address the needs and foster the growth of climate-resilient, sustainable, and eco-friendly entrepreneurship in Sri Lanka. Activities so far include capacity-building and data collection sessions with entrepreneurs in several districts, focusing on climate risk management as well as sustainable and climate-friendly business models and products.

Annual National Building Research Organization Symposium (NBRO)

The 13th Annual National Building Research Organization (NBRO) Symposium took place on February 29th, 2024, under the theme “Building Resilience: 40 Years in Retrospect” The event showcased over 30 abstracts and presented around 25 case studies across technical sessions on; Technology Advancement for Landslide Risk Management, Building Resilient Communities and Settlements for Natural Disasters, Regulatory Services for Safer Buildings and Construction, Geotechnical Approaches for Slope Stabilization, Research and Innovation for Sustainable Building Materials, and Sustainable Environment for Healthy Living.

The 28th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC and the Paris Agreement (COP28) took place in November/December 2023 and resulted in several important decisions. This includes the establishment of a dedicated Loss and Damage Fund, which will be operationalized this year; the finalization of the Santiago Network on Loss and Damage, which will connect requests for technical support with technical support providers; and the UAE Framework for Global Climate Resilience, which provides a North Star for adaptation and resilience-building efforts across the world.
