Dear <<First Name>>,
March 26, 2024
We the People is ALL of Us, not Some of Us
Although it was not expected, most students who attended the book talk gathering this past Saturday to discuss Heather McGhee's book, The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together, had read the book. That is a lofty accomplishment since McGhee's book covers a breadth of topics about racial history in our country in dense detail. It made for a very interesting morning talking about issues not always discussed in high school classrooms, like the history of unions as cross-racial organizing that shape many benefits all workers have today and the role predatory lending and subprime loans targeted towards black and brown families had in the 2008 Financial Crisis. We learned more about racial covenants from a student who is working to have discriminating language amended on housing deeds in Webster Groves and other areas of St. Louis. Another student shared a summary of the young adult novel, The Black Kids, written by Christina Hammonds Reed about class stereotypes among high school students in Los Angeles during the Rodney King riots. The morning ended with a list of actions teens can take to address eliminating racial stereotypes that result in inequalities that hold back progress for all people, especially economically, in the United States.

Join Civitas for a private bus tour of St. Louis!
Saturday, April 20, 10:00 am-noon
Civitas has booked the "More than an Arch" tour through the Missouri History Museum for 32 students to experience together for free on Saturday, April 20 from 10:00 am until noon. The iconic Gateway Arch is an internationally recognized symbol of St. Louis, Missouri; but there is so much more to this vibrant city on the Mississippi River. According to the MO History website, our tour will be "a whirlwind but surprising in-depth trip through as much St. Louis history as we can cram into 2 hours. Route includes historical highlights as well as visits to hidden gems throughout both north and south St. Louis. See off-the-beaten-path neighborhoods such as Carondelet, Dutchtown, Kosciusko, Hyde Park, the Ville, and more!"

We will depart promptly at 10:00 am (so arrive early) from the MO History Museum (map) and return at noon.

First Middle School Model UN General Assembly is Today!
We cannot wait to see all the colorful placards! Note: This photo was from last year.

Today is the first Middle School Model UN session of the 2023-2024 school year. We will have students from 3 schools participating; Holman Middle, Pattonville Heights Middle, and the St. Louis Homeschool Network. Delegates will be discussing resolutions on education in Niger, building infrastructure in Honduras, animal cruelty in Australia, clean water in Guinea, and child labor. These students have put in a ton of hard work, and we’re excited to see how they tackle solving world problems. To see the resolutions for this session and information on all of the other middle school MUN sessions, please click here.

Summer Opportunity for Middle and High School Students
Explore international challenges of the UN and the USA

Dr. Robert Barnidge, Chaminade College Preparatory instructor, is offering two summer camps that might appeal to Model UN fans (and others!) at Chaminade (425 South Lindbergh Blvd., 63131) in June this summer:

MODEL UNITED NATIONS

June 17-20, Monday-Thursday, 9am-Noon
Boys & Girls Entering Grades 6-12
$200

This camp will explore the United Nations, a body founded after the Second World War to “save succeeding generations from the scourge of war.” Using a variety of active learning techniques, students will learn about some of the world’s most pressing challenges. Each student will represent a state in the United Nations Security Council, conduct research from that state’s perspective on a specific issue, and draft a Security Council resolution. On the last day of the camp, students will debate and vote on the draft resolutions in a simulation.

MODEL NATIONAL SECURITY COUNCIL

June 24-27, Monday-Thursday, 9am-Noon
Boys & Girls Entering Grades 6-12
$200

This camp will explore the National Security Council, the President of the United States’ principal venue for national security and foreign policy decision making and main arm for coordinating such matters across federal agencies. Using a variety of active learning techniques, students will learn about some of the United States’ most pressing international challenges. Each student will represent a member of the National Security Council, conduct research from that member’s perspective on a specific issue, and draft a brief position paper. On the last day of the camp, students will participate in a simulation.
