The Power of Community in Asthma Management

La Fondria Brown, PhD, tells a story of how learning through community helped her manage her asthma.

La Fondria joined a community asthma education program in St. Louis. AAFA's Health Equity Advancement and Leadership (HEAL) outreach sponsors the program.

Through the St. Louis HEAL effort, La Fondria connected with other people in her area working together to manage their asthma. She learned new strategies for asthma management and now says she has all the tools she needs to address her asthma symptoms.

“I’m so glad I kept looking for answers,” La Fondria said. “And I would encourage anyone to take advantage of a program like HEAL. My life was great before, but it’s even better now that I have all the tools to manage my asthma.”

Do You Live in an Allergy Capital?

Last week, AAFA released our annual Allergy Capitals™ report detailing the most challenging cities in the United States for living with seasonal allergies.

The report highlights the urgency of the climate crisis.

“Climate change fuels a perfect storm of conditions that make allergy season worse for people with pollen allergy,” said AAFA President and CEO Kenneth Mendez. “Longer growing seasons mean more exposure to pollen allergy triggers. Additionally, pollen counts tend to rise with warmer temperatures. Now, we see both more days of exposure to pollen and higher daily pollen counts leading to more intense, longer-lasting symptoms.”

The top 5 Allergy Capitals this year are:

  1. Wichita, Kansas

  1. Virginia Beach, Virginia

  1. Greenville, South Carolina

  1. Dallas, Texas

  1. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Asthma Inhaler Costs Going Down

AAFA recently called for national action to address the high costs of asthma medicine. Following that call, two drug manufacturers announced steps to cap the out-of-pocket cost of asthma inhalers at $35 a month for people who are eligible.

The covered products include Spiriva Respimat made by Boehringer Ingelheim and Symbicort and AIRSUPRA from AstraZeneca.

Read our blog for the full list of inhalers covered by these announcements.

The price change goes into effect June 1, 2024.

In response to these announcements, AAFA called for further action from all stakeholders to make asthma medicines affordable and accessible.

"The announced cost reductions from Boehringer Ingelheim and AstraZeneca are a step toward improving access to essential asthma medicine and demonstrates that the voice of the asthma patient community is being heard,” states Kenneth Mendez, President and CEO of AAFA. “AAFA will continue to advocate that all stakeholders in the drug pricing ecosystem take steps to improve affordability and access for life-saving medicines.”
