NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK

National Library Week is an annual celebration that highlights the important role of libraries, librarians, and staff in our communities. It all began in the 1950s when people started reading less and spending more time with TVs and radios. To encourage reading and support libraries, the American Library Association and book publishers’ National Book Committee launched National Library Week in 1958 with the theme "Wake Up and Read!" This year marks its 65th anniversary.

To celebrate this year, the Highwood Library will offer the following FREE events throughout the week:

CELEBRATING NATIONAL POETRY MONTH

WITH A SPECIAL AUTHOR VISIT

Join us in celebrating National Poetry Month, established by the Academy of American Poets in April 1996 to honor the significant contributions of poets to our culture. As we celebrate, we're excited to announce a special Author Visit with local poet Rick Telander!

Rick Telander is a Sun-Times, Sports Illustrated, and ESPN writer who has won eight Illinois Sportswriter of the Year awards. He has had his work collected in The Best American Sportswriting Anthology eight times and over two dozen other anthologies. Rick is the author of eight books, one of which, Heaven Is A Playground, was named one of the 100 Best Sports Books by Sports Illustrated and made into a movie.

On Saturday, April 13, 2024, from 1PM to 2PM, Rick will read excerpts from his newest book Sweet Dreams, which is comprised of poems he has written over a 30-year timeframe. This event is open to all ages, so bring the whole family and immerse yourselves in the beauty of poetry!  Stick around afterward for engaging activities and refreshments.

Don't miss out on this wonderful opportunity to connect with a talented local author and celebrate the power of poetry in our lives.

Mark your calendar and join us at this event! It is free and open to the public. No registration required.
