DMU Grand Rounds: Organ Donation, April 4, 2024

​There are currently 637 Iowans waiting for an organ transplant. Organ donation in Iowa is crucial in saving lives and improving the health of those who need it. All health care professionals must be aware of the importance of organ donation, dispel myths and encourage their patients to make informed decisions about registering as donors.


 

Health PASS 2024! Back In-Person and Looking for Heart 2 Heart Mentors

​The Health Professions Advanced Summer Scholars Program is back in-person this year. Every June (this year the dates of the program are June 8-28), DMU invites 10 undergraduate students to explore and learn about the DMU clinical programs, application process and the amazing environment here at DMU. We are looking for at least 20 DMU students across all programs who are interested in serving as a Heart 2 Heart Mentor.


 

D.P.T. Leadership Transition

After several months of discussion and planning, the leadership within the Doctor of Physical Therapy department will be transitioning. Effective academic year 2024-25, Traci Bush, P.T.’95, D.P.T., OTR/L, DHS, is stepping down as the chair/program director of the D.P.T. department.

In addition to pursuing her medical degree, Taylor LaChapelle, D.O.’26, is an international champion in another form of heavy lifting: In November she won first place in her weight class and first place overall at the World Open Equipped Powerlifting Championships in Lithuania.

The Des Moines University osteopathic medicine Class of 2024 hit it out of the ballpark in the main residency match for medical school seniors, achieving a 100% match rate announced March 15.

Iowa Medical Students Advocate for Patients and Physicians at the AMA Med Student Advocacy Conference in Washington, D.C.

Three students in Des Moines University’s Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine program attended the American Medical Association’s Medical Student Advocacy Conference in Washington, D.C., on March 7-8, 2024. They learned important skills to advocate for physicians, patients and the community and networked with other med students.
