FEATURED STORIES

Chile: Regional center for Earth Observation

The European program for Earth observation, Copernicus, is the largest of its kind in the world. Following its development of a Copernicus Data Repository, REUNA – the Chilean NREN – has opened a center which will extend the services to the entire region.

Skyrocketing use of Armenia’s digital library

Born just five years ago, the Pan-Armenian Digital Library had more than 2.6 million visits in 2023. Operated by NREN ASNET-AM and partners, the library has 252,000 articles, books, newspapers, voice recordings etc. available.

ICYMI: Sydney and Tokyo joined in volumetric performance

A real-time 3D representation of a violinist performing live in Tokyo, Japan, allowed an audience in Sydney, Australia to co-create improvised music. AARNet, the Australian NREN, regional network ARENA-PAC, and Guam’s network GOREX, made it possible.

Supercomputing speeds up fire engineering

Proving fire safety is a key task when seeking permission to erect new buildings, and construction projects often have tight schedules. With the help of a supercomputer operated by CSC, the NREN of Finland, consultants Ramboll have managed to do calculations 20 times faster.

A campus network for Antarctic research

It was far from just another day at the office for network engineer Henning Løvmo from Sikt, the Norwegian NREN, who spent three weeks in early 2024, installing a campus network at the Norwegian Polar Institute’s Troll research station at Antarctica.

ICYMI: Migrating birds turn Finns into citizen scientists

In Finland, thousands of citizens have responded to a call from NREN CSC and partners to submit audio recordings of migrating birds. To date, some 3.7 million recordings were submitted providing a unique base for biodiversity studies.
