Summer Camp Spotlight
How It's Made

This summer, Kalama teacher Joyce will be running a series of camps called How It's Made!  She will be covering a variety of objects, from ceramics, playdoh, and fabric objects to food and other items made with molds.  These camps are all stand-alone, which means your campers can choose to take one or more camps without missing out on any information if they miss an earlier session.

Like our other camps, these run from Monday - Friday, 9am to 3pm.  Cost is $365 per camp.

If you are interested in signing up your child for summer camps this year, visit our Summer Camp webpage soon!

Wy'East Adventures at Portland Bird Alliance Marmot Cabin Outdoor School
Our Third and Fourth graders in Wy'East had a grand adventure in the outdoors last week, spending three days and two nights at the beautiful Marmot Cabin near Sandy, OR.  Marmot Cabin is owned by the Portland Bird Alliance (formerly Portland Audubon), and is a beautiful newer facility with staff dedicated to teaching ecology and science to students from the Greater Portland Area.  Wy'East got to stay together in one big yurt with their chaperones, Teacher Bebe and Teacher Jared.  With the way Marmot has their outdoor school structured, our school was the only one there for those three days, and so our kids got a lot of individualized attention and instruction!

Students showed a great deal of courage, as for some of them it was their first big trip away from home.  They worked through big feelings of homesickness, and got to bond as a classroom through their experiences. And they demonstrated lively curiosity about their classes and the field studies, as they examined animal pelts and discussed the local ecology!

Our overnight outdoor school adventures for our Wy'East and Klickitat students are a key part of Gardner's experiential education model.  We rotate through at least four partner programs, so over the course of four years, students have the opportunity to attend several different outdoor schools run by organizations such as Portland Bird Alliance and OMSI, in a variety of locations.  In addition to offering students a broad variety of experiences, another benefit of this rotation is that older students were able to answer questions for the younger ones as they prepared for their time at Marmot Cabin, as our 6th graders went when they were 4th graders!

Tumtum Gets a Taste of the Netherlands - Hagelslag!
As part of their World Studies thematic, Tumtum does a deep dive into the culture of the Netherlands.  Friday, April 19th, they will be visiting the Holland America Tulip Farm, and last week they indulged in what is often referred to as a highlight of the Tumtum year:  Hagelslag Day!

Hagelslag is buttered toast covered in sprinkles, and is a very popular breakfast food or snack in the Netherlands. Tumtum got to make their own to try.  The treat is so named because in Dutch, the word “hagel” means “hail” and the sprinkles reminded the creator of hail when he shook them onto his bread! Tumtum only tasted the fruit flavor, but if you want to try your own at home there are many varieties available, including different chocolates and licorice! These sprinkles can easily be ordered on Amazon, and they are also sometimes available at World Market.

Tumtum also talked about tulips, which are very popular in the Netherlands, in preparation for their field trip to the tulip farm this coming Friday.  They learned a bit about how the tulips grow from bulbs and how bulbs are different from seeds. They also learned that tulips were imported to the Netherlands over 500 years ago, in the 1500’s. After they first arrived, someone wrote a book about
them and they became so popular that everyone wanted them. Many people even started trading tulips to other people so they could get new kinds of tulips.

If you want to visit a Tulip Farm with your family, Holland America's farm is not open to the public, but the Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm in Woodburn is open to the public until April 28th!
