This week I learned that darkness can be exquisitely beautiful.

On Monday, I rode my wife's bike to the National Mall and laid on the ground with thousands of people to watch the moon cover 87% of the sun.

We clapped and cheered as the sun became a shining silver sliver.

This was the first time in my life I've celebrated darkness.

For most of my childhood and adulthood, I was terrified of nighttime. I came by this fear honestly because when I was a kid, I was harmed at night.

Now, after lots of processing and therapy, I'm finally able to enjoy some things about the evening: creamsicle sunsets, my neighborhood quieting, and gently catching up with with my wife.

--

This fear of darkness had long been one of my "healing edges" - a place inside of me that is sensitive, evolving, and very much a work in progress.

My humble prayer is you can approach your own healing edges with the love, care, and tenderness you deserve.

I'm here for you always.
