Note from Mr. Smith

Sometimes the hardest thing is just to get started. Students, there are seven weeks left of school, six weeks left classes. I find myself so often writing my newsletter note about student motivation and encouraging students to keep moving forward. I think this is because I find this is the number one aspect of success. Showing up. Getting started on tasks that we have put off in our life can be difficult. Once you get started, you will find how quickly and successfully you are able to get through.

The other day I talked with a student who just felt overwhelmed with what they had to do to finish out the year. The reality is they had completed at almost half the course, but was still feeling overwhelmed because the end was coming quickly. So we worked out a schedule where they were able to focus on the daily tasks on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and then the tasks from the past, on Tuesday and Thursday. If they're able to follow their own schedule, they will quickly find within a couple of weeks they will be passing all their courses.

Need help with this? Reach out to your teacher, anyone of them, and they will help you put together a weekly schedule.

Next Year: Parents, this next month and a half is going to go quickly. Please make sure your child has select their courses for next year.  Have a great May everyone!

Summit Fieldtrip Opportunity at U of C!

In previous years the Human Performance Lab at the University of Calgary has hosted an Open House for high school students in their labs, giving students the opportunity to learn more about the amazing research that takes place at the HPL. They have hosted this event since 2007, and are eager to open their doors to high school students in the Calgary and area once again.

This year the event will be hosted on Tuesday, May 7 from 9:30 AM – 3:30 PM, with a one-hour lunch break. You can choose to attend the morning, afternoon, or entire day.

We are invited to bring our students to this event, where they set aside time to demonstrate their research specifically to high school students. It is a great opportunity for our students to see many research projects, in a variety of fields.  Students can expect to see many subjects (such as mathematics, biology, physics, and chemistry) applied in a research setting. There will be several stations set up. The students will move about in groups of about 10 and spend 20 minutes at each station. They can expect to see experimental methods being demonstrated, be able to participate where possible, and ask detailed questions of the staff and researchers on hand. The researchers are experienced in describing their work at a level that the students can understand.

Expect to be wowed all day!

Student Password Update:

From RVS IT

To meet new security requirements, we're ensuring our RVS user accounts have secure passwords, integrating more services into our staff and student directories. The recent PowerSchool upgrade now requires Grade 9-12 students to access their information via their RVS Google accounts.

High school students have had several weeks to secure their passwords and starting Wednesday May 1st,  2024 all students that are still using the default password will have their account suspended.   These students will then lose access to the RVS network including  wifi, Google, Moodle, PowerSchool etc. and will be required to book an appointment with the school tech to restore access. Our hope with the May 1st deadline is to support the majority of students prior to the hectic year-end schedule of school and provincial assessments.

For support email our RVS Tech department at studentsupport@rockyview.ab.ca
