MESSAGE FROM THE REV. CANON TODD D. SMELSER

This Saturday at 11:00 a.m. Dr. Bertice Berry will be ordained a deacon in Christ’s Church at Christ Church. While maintaining a very active professional life, she felt God’s call to be part of the ordained ministry of the Episcopal Church. After years of discernment, study, and spiritual nurture, she will stand before Bishop Logue and make a commitment to serve all people, particularly the poor, the weak, the sick, and the lonely. Liturgically, she will, with Deacon Patti, read the Gospel, lead the prayers of the people, and set the table for the celebration of the Eucharist. Deacons are ordained only by the Bishop, and they serve directly under his authority. Her ministry will not only be that of our parish, but of the whole of the Diocese of Georgia.

In the earliest days of the Church, deacons were responsible for the care of those in need. They were to distribute food for the hungry, clothing for those without, and carry Communion to those unable to attend the weekly Eucharist, either because of age or illness. The recovery of the diaconate in our denomination has restored the original apostolic ministry of the Church, the three-fold ministry of bishop, priest and deacon.

All priests and deacons are ordained deacon, for at least six months, but Bertice is what we call a perpetual deacon. She does not seek ordination as a priest, but will continue her career as teacher, speaker and writer. Her ministry of loving God and her neighbor is no different from yours but is now perhaps clearer and more focused. Except for the collar and stole she will be the same person but, after being ordained, she will represent the needs of the world to the Church, and the message of love and forgiveness of Jesus to the world.  As the Bishop will say on Saturday,  “At all times, your life and teaching are to show Christ’s people, that in serving the helpless they are serving Christ himself.”

Reflections on Easter: Theme and Variations

9:30 a.m. Adult Forum in the Chapel
April 7–May 12

Join us in the chapel during the Easter season as we discover the wonderful variations found in the life-changing theme of Easter. Borrowing a concept from musical compositions, we will begin with one theme: Easter. Different Easter stories from Scripture will be shared, and we will listen each week as a new variation flows forth and transforms us. Variations include forgiveness, reconciliation, joy, and peace.

Christ Church Choristers

Chorister rehearsals for the spring season continue this Sunday directly after the 10:30 a.m. Eucharist. Choristers will enjoy a time of fellowship and a pizza lunch following coffee hour, and rehearse for an hour in the choir room. Choristers sing for the 10:30 Eucharist on May 12, Mother's Day. For a full rehearsal schedule and to sign up, contact George Fergus.

Savannah choral ensemble Musica Atlantica joins with Washington D.C.-based Bridge Voices to offer this hour-long program of music stretching from the English Reformation up through a world premiere of a new work by Baltimore composer Jonathan Woody.

Baptism of Elizabeth Jane Lindley this Sunday

Elizabeth Jane Lindley was born on November 14, 2023 to Jamie and Spencer Hancock Lindley. Her Episcopal ties go back quite far here in Savannah, as she is a sixth generation Savannahian. Ellie’s parents both grew up in Savannah, where Jamie is Vice President of Byrd Cookie Company and Spencer is a realtor with Seabolt Real Estate. The Rev. Michael White married Spencer and Jamie, so it is exciting for him to now baptize Ellie. Spencer’s identical twin sister, Leigh, and her husband, Jake Clemens, are Ellie’s godparents. The Lindley Family is thankful for God’s blessing of precious Ellie.
