Niagara Fiesta Extravaganza 

The 3rd annual Niagara Fiesta Extravaganza, organized by the Filipino community in Niagara, will be held on Saturday, August 3rd, and Sunday, August 4th, 2024, at Firemen's Park. Six Fiesta Extravaganza events are also held in selected cities in Canada.  

Highlights include Musicial Extravaganza, cultural presentations, a food expo, exhibits, games and community spotlight.

Family and Children's Services Niagara (FACS) - Mountainview LemonAID Day

FACS Niagara Foundation President Caroline Polgrabia and Jayden Polgrabia presented to Council about the 3rd Annual Mountainview LemonAID Day.  

On Saturday, June 8, teams of kids will set up lemonade stands across Niagara to ask for donations to send vulnerable children in the community to summer camp.

Council requested that the Mayor's Youth Advisory Committee (MYAC) take the lead in finding locations to host LemonAID stands and that the Niagara Falls Illumination Board change the colour of the Falls to yellow to draw awareness to the event. The City of Niagara Falls will assist in promoting the event.

Rotary District Conference
 
The District Governor Elect for Rotary (Rotary Club of Welland), David Alexander, spoke before Council regarding an upcoming Rotary District Conference on Saturday, October 26, 2024. 

The conference brings together Rotarians from upstate New York and parts of South West Ontario. Its aim is to bring together all the leading community organizations to discuss volunteering trends, issues, needs, and opportunities.

Council asked Staff to look into possible venues for the event.

Summer Street Shelter

Resident Amanda Jellema addressed Council on behalf of the residents and businesses in the Main Street, Lowell Avenue, and Summer Street area, who are concerned about safety issues around the Summer Street Shelter.

Council directed Staff to come back with a report and set up a meeting with all partners, including Regional Councillors, Public Health representatives, Niagara Regional Police, and By-Law officers, to find a solution collectively.

2024 Development Charge (DC) Update
 
The City is currently updating its Development Charges (DC) Background Study and By-Law. Staff has engaged Hemson Consulting Ltd. to assist with the update of the Background Study and By-Law.

Throughout the update process, Staff, Hemson Consulting, and Development Stakeholders have identified several opportunities. This report provides Council with recommendations related to these opportunities in advance of the updated DC By-Laws being adopted.

Council approved the report, including several recommendations. 

 
In-Camera Session: Purchase of 237 acres of land at
12761 Sodom Road

After an In-Camera Session was held, it was reported that Council approved the purchase of 237 acres of land at 12761 Sodom Road and directed staff to approach the Province to investigate the designation of the QEW corridor between Niagara Falls and Fort Erie as a Provincially Significant Employment Zone.

  • Financial Assistance request for a 100-112 unit affordable housing project on 8055 McLeod Road
    • Council approved a Financial Assistance request from Niagara Falls Non-Profit Housing (NFPN), including Planning fee waivers, a grant equivalent to the Building Planning Fees and a discretionary exemption to Community Benefit, subject to provisions.
  • 2023 Housing & Growth Monitoring Report - Year in Review
    • Council received the Development and Housing Monitoring Report that reviews the status of development and growth management activity for the City for the year 2023.

Flag-Raising Request  | April 2024
Dig Safe Month
April is "Dig Safe" month. Before digging, residents are encouraged to make sure they call for locates first, prior to excavating and to know the rules of working around buried utility lines. Council approved a flag-raising to bring awareness to the problems that can come with unsafe digging practices. 
"Sikh Heritage Month"
Proclamation and Flag-Raising Request  | April 2024
Sikh Heritage Month
Council approved a request from the Sikh community of Niagara Falls to proclaim April as "Sikh Heritage Month" and arrange for a flag-raising ceremony as a symbol of solidarity and respect toward the Sikh community.

National Day of Mourning
Council approved a request from the Niagara Regional Labour Council to proclaim Sunday, April 28, 2024, the National Day of Mourning to remember those who have suffered injury and/or died on the job. The flag will be flown at half-mast to observe the day.

Council approved a request to make Thursday, May 9, 2024, Canadian Viral Hepatitis Elimination Day.

Moose Hide Campaign Day
Council proclaimed Thursday, May 16, 2024, as Moose Hide Campaign Day. The Moose Hide Campaign is a grassroots organization that is indigenous-led hoping to raise awareness around issues of reconciliation and violence against women and girls.
Haitian Flag
Proclamation and Flag-Raising Request | May 18, 2024
Haitian Day
Council approved a request by the Ambassador of Haiti to proclaim Saturday, May 18, 2024, as Haitian Day and for a flag-raising ceremony at City Hall as well as Falls Illumination that evening with the colours of Haiti (red and blue) to commemorate this celebrated day.
"Menstrual Health Day"
Proclamation Request  | May 28, 2024
Menstrual Health Day
Council approved a request by the registered charity, The Period Purse (TPP), to proclaim Tuesday, May 28, 2024, as Menstrual Health Day. In 2023, Women and Gender Equality Canada awarded the Menstrual Equity Fund Pilot to Food Banks Canada. The national pilot has two objectives: to test a national approach to providing free access to menstrual products and to increase education and awareness of people’s knowledge of menstrual products, good
practices and period stigma.

Proclamation and Flag-Raising Request  | June 3-9, 2024
Shriners Week
Council proclaimed the week of June 3 - June 9 as Shriners Week and will perform a flag-raising ceremony on Thursday, June 6. 

Shriners International is a fraternity based on fun, fellowship and the Masonic principles of brotherly love, relief and truth, founded Shriners Hospitals for Children in 1922 as its official philanthropy. Shriners International continues to support the hospitals by raising funds, assisting patients’ families with transportation, volunteering on hospital boards and much more.
