Principal’s Notes

It is hard to believe that the year is coming to a close. I remember the excitement of planning for this year last summer, and the joy when everyone arrived on campus in September, and so very many wonderful conversations, events and opportunities to connect. For those of you who were in residence this year and are moving out, remember that you have more stuff today compared to when you arrived, and you aren’t just LEC while you are living here, you are LEC your whole time at Trent and beyond!

There are so very many people to thank for a year like this, we are a community of students, staff, faculty and alumni and the best stuff happens when we come together. My deep thanks to all the LEC student leaders, from those of you working in Housing, on Cabinet, or the TCSA or other student groups, and to each of you who in your own way lead or help or create space for this magic to happen.

I do have a special place in my heart for those students who work in the College Office. To Alex and Emily who are graduating - you will be missed and we can’t wait to hear about your adventures. And to those who are returning next year, Aditi, Ashley, Isabelle, Kari, Kaleigh, Lakshika, Maddie, and Sam, we are so glad to have you back and be on this adventure with you. All these folks bring the creativity, the energy, the humour and the care to this office and gosh they make it a very fun place to work.

We are going to take a short break from the Drumline, but we will be back in mid-May with the summer edition and some new features. In the meantime please continue to follow us on socials and if you have not already done so, download the Outlook App on your phone. You will want access to your Trent email, and the Drumline so we can keep you posted all summer about important deadlines, news and course registration information!

Academic Skills

A Message from Academic Skills

Balancing exams and final papers during this time can sometimes result in less sleep and care for yourself. Here are some tips for finding balance during the end of a busy term.

Prioritize sleep. Research shows us a significant relationship between sleep, memory, and overall cognitive functioning. While it can be tempting to pull an all-nighter to cram for that exam, consider the power of sleep! To help yourself wind down from a busy or stressful day, try to identify three things you can do to help cue your body that it's time for sleep. You might listen to a podcast, read a book, put your phone away, enjoy a cup of chamomile tea (try and avoid caffeine!), or write three things that made you smile during the day in a journal.

Remember to eat and hydrate. It can be easy to forget these things when we're overwhelmed. Try packing a water bottle and snacks with you wherever you go.

Schedule time for you. Do you sometimes feel guilty when you take a break? This is a common feeling when we have many tasks to do, but it's important to acknowledge that we need to care for ourselves in order to work on the tasks before us. Try making a realistic and specific to-do list for your day and include breaks and time for you on that list; intentionally planning for this important time can help us avoid feeling guilty for taking it. Seeing it on your list can also be a nice reminder and motivator!

Acknowledge test stress and make a plan. If you typically experience exam anxiety or test stress, consider exploring resources from Trent Counselling and the Academic Skills Exam Guide where you'll find strategies for studying, writing exams, and managing test stress. If you'd like to learn more and speak with an Academic Skills instructor, book an appointment at www.trentu.ca/sep.

Best wishes as you finish the term!

Toad-ally Top Three

Hello Friends!

The school year is wrapping up, which I know can be a stressful time, but it also means summer is almost here! Whatever your plans are over the summer season, I hope you have a toad-ally amazing time. This is my last edition of Toad-ally Top Three  and the warm weather the past week has me in a summer mood, so… may I present to you… the top three things to manifest for summer as we get through exams:

  1. Ice cream!- Personally, I am 100% a supporter of eating ice cream all year. However, there is something special about an ice cream cone on a warm sunny day!

  2. Longer days!- Did you know the sun will set tonight at 8:02 pm?? That’s crazy! It feels like just the other day I was trekking through the cold and dark to get across campus to my 6pm classes. And as we approach summer solstice, we’re going to gain a whole extra hour of sun light!

  3. Having the windows open!- Whether you’re a drive with the windows down kind of person or a let all the air conditioning out of the house because you just love the fresh air so much kind of person (much to my parents’ dismay, I am the latter), now is your time to shine!

It’s been so great sharing my unsolicited opinions with you this semester, thanks for tuning in! Good luck with finals and have a great summer!

See you later alligators,

Bookish Babbles

Happy end of the semester LEC!

I hope you’re proud of all the great things you’ve accomplished this school year and are excited for the summer ahead! Since this is the last Bookish Babbles I thought I would share my favourite book with you today. This one is by one of my all-time favourite authors and the story means a lot to me, so I definitely encourage you to check it out!

And if you’re looking for summer reading don’t forget to check out the Book Nook in the JCR where you can take or leave books!

Recommendation: I Was Born for This by Alice Oseman! Fandom and fan culture! Boy band! Muslim and trans main characters! This dual perspective novel follows the lead singer of a famous boy band and a super fan of the band as their paths unexpectedly cross. It features incredible anxiety representation as well!

And that's all for now... Just kidding, you know we can't end the semester without toad puns!

People and critters of LEC have gathered in The Pit to study! They are having a productive and pun-ny time. A frog riding a snail says "I really snailed it this semester" A person on the bench thinks "I think my campus is haunted, because there's a lot of school spirit" another says "I'm a science major, and I'm sodium funny" a toad says "Seven days without a pun makes one weak" a toad sitting by a stack of books thinks "I must have figured out the squadratic equation because I have the best friends" A person sitting on the floor with books and papers says "The sun doesn't have to go to college, because it's already got like 28 million degrees" a girl laying on the floor says "Past, present and future walked into a bad. it was tense." two toads say "Never read Fitzgerald? You Gatsby kidding me!" "Dystopian novels are so 1984"
