Hello Hornets!

The eclipse was exciting to see, but nothing quite beats the excitement of Sacramento State sports. Fortunately, we have you covered for everything sports related, including Summah Hanson’s incredible season, women’s tennis had a dominating win, softball’s grand slam and baseball winning two games after a tough series.

From growing up on a boat in Australia, to making waves in the NCAA, freshman forward Summah Hanson has solidified herself as a rising star after etching her name into Sacramento State’s record books.

Since a young age, Hanson has wanted to follow in her father’s footsteps of competing in the Olympics. While her father was a three-time Olympic medalist in rowing, Hanson has created her own path on the basketball court.

“Everything I do is stepping stones to try and get there one day,” Hanson said.

Sacramento State women’s tennis showed up in a dominating fashion against UC San Diego at the Sac State tennis courts for their second win in a row on Thursday, March 28.

It was a close start with both teams winning two games. Sac State head coach Sophie Breault said she spoke to junior Weronika Ejsmont and senior Best Lee in between games and reminded them to stay focused and to stick to the game plan.

“I just told them to cover the line when you’re at the net and when you’re in the baseline,” Breault said. “Just go with a heavy spin over them so they can’t poachand if you stay two, three balls across you can poach yourself.”

It was the top of the sixth inning in the second game of Sacramento State softball’s doubleheader on Friday, March 29, against Northern Colorado. The Hornets were down 4-2 and needed a clutch hit to close the gap.

Freshman pinch hitter Malissa George came up to bat with the bases loaded and two outs on the board. Soon, the count was two and two. George had fouled off the last two pitches; she knew she needed a hit.

“We were down and needed to score a couple runs,” George said. “I was just trying to put a good at bat together, I worked the count and got a good pitch to swing on.”

Sacramento State baseball went 3-2 in five games against Grand Canyon University on March 28 to March 30, the University of San Francisco on April 1 and the University of Nevada on April 2.

This was another rough patch for Sac State due to the inconsistencies of their offense, but they found success after changing their approach at the plate.

“With the practice that we do every day and the training, we just hope that gets us to the end goal of winning every game,” junior left fielder Matt Masciangelo said.
