With TK Students at Wilbur Elementary

Dear friends and partners,

Last week, we welcomed students back from Spring Break and into the home stretch of the school year. Teachers and students are busy achieving their goals, and our high school seniors can begin to see graduation on the horizon, although not before taking in the awe-inspiring eclipse this week.

The work of the Board continues. At this week’s meeting, we approved an expanded set of after school providers, which has been a priority of mine. We also approved new facilities work including a large group of greening and outdoor learning projects, and several contracts for career technical education and apprenticeship opportunities. We reviewed the District’s multi-pronged approach to safety, recognized Autism Awareness month, and more.

I was also thrilled to visit several Board District 4 Schools this week, including an Open House with families at Lokrantz, one of our special education centers serving students with disabilities. Seeing classrooms in action helps keep me focused on our students and the work we continue to do to make sure they get the opportunities they deserve.

In gratitude,

In the last few weeks, my team and I were thrilled to join a volunteer day in partnership with City Year LA to beautify Fairfax High's campus, a visit with my team to LAUSD's musical instrument repair shop featured in the Last Repair Shop documentary, as well as visits to Phoenix Continuation High School, Wright Middle School, Westchester High Enriched Sciences Magnets, Katherine Johnson STEM Academy, Loyola Village Elementary, Wilbur Elementary, Portola Middle School, Lokrantz Special Education Center, and Melrose Elementary!
In the Spotlight: Giving thanks for one of our hardworking counselors!
We are thankful for the hard work of all our school employees, including Vanessa Almonte, a school counselor at Phoenix Continuation High School! Vanessa is a state champion with the California Race to Submit FAFSA/CADAA college financial aid submissions. Through her leadership, all the school’s seniors have submitted their college financial aid applications for the past 4 years! In addition, Phoenix has ranked #1 in California (compared to similar schools) in FAFSA/CADAA submissions for the last 4 years. Vanessa will be receiving the Counselor of the Year Award during the CCEA Conference to recognize all of her amazing work! Congratulations Vanessa!
