Dear friends,

Please join us for the opening of RETURN TO WATER 2024 at 1pm this Saturday, April 13. Everyone is welcome to this free event which will include an artist talk by Sonny Assu, cultural sharing, and a reception.

RETURN TO WATER 2024 is a convergent program that will run from April 13 - May 25. It  includes:
  • Assertion of Sovereignty, an exhibition by Sonny Assu (Ligwiłda’xw of the Kwakwaka’wakw Nations) that points to the past in which Indigenous people of this region lived within a harmonic balance with the watershed.
  • The world premiere of Sonny's first ever animated artwork, The Last of Us, made with collaborating animator Dan Beaule. This will run 24/7 on the LED screen facing the CVAG Plaza.
  • Shifting Currents, series of activations with community partners that will provide opportunities for sharing, presenting, and art-based activities for the public. (Stay tuned to our website, Facebook, or Instagram for details).
As part of this year's RETURN TO WATER program, we are honoured to display three water-related works by the late Robert Moon, a long-time CVAG volunteer who died earlier this year. These will be exhibited in our Gather:Place room.

CVAG first presented the program IN THE WATER in 2020 — it was our last exhibition before COVID-19 caused the Gallery to close for several months. For the past three years, we have presented
RETURN TO WATER in the spring. The program instigates consideration of how we as human beings are in relationship with the waters of this region.

Why not make a day of it? After visiting CVAG, grab a meal at one of Downtown Courtenay's dining establishments and attend a reading at Artful: The Gallery, who will be hosting writers Judy LeBlanc, Arleen Pare, and Cornelia Hoogland at 7pm on Saturday.

See you soon!
