Headmaster's Message

Sacred Heart College ends Term 1 positively
In this last week of the term, I am mindful of a number of significant achievements which include:
  • A well-organised and most enjoyable Year 13 Ball at the Ellerslie Events Centre. I was particularly pleased with the boys' manners and excellent social skills - introducing their partners and taking good care of them during the Ball.
  • The amazing community spirit of the annual Sacred Heart College PTA Fair. It is not only a wonderful fundraiser, but it draws a community together, including students, parents, staff, Old Boys and members of the local community in a spirit of goodwill and generosity. My sincere thanks to all the volunteers who make it such a successful community event.
  • Our Premier Water Polo Team won the NZWP Team of the Year, and Justin Pickering Coach of the Year. This is a well-deserved accolade for his skill, enthusiasm, and devotion to SHC Water Polo. Winning the Auckland Championship against Westlake Boys High School was a superb way to finish the term.
  • The Year 7 & 8 Father and Son Mass and Breakfast celebrated our faith, tradition, and Marist spirit.
  • Work has begun on our long-awaited Science Discovery Centre.
Term 2 Academic Focus
The hope and expectation of staff is that after a well-earned break, your sons return to school with a renewed enthusiasm and drive for academic achievement, particularly those undertaking the Sacred Heart Certificate or NCEA. This is the business end of the school year.

I take this opportunity to thank you for your support of Sacred Heart College over this term. I wish you an enjoyable time with your son/s during the April school holidays.

Students are asked to complete a total of 6 hours of service over this time, looking beyond their own needs and to the needs of others. Information has been shared with students and parents, and can be found here.

Academic

Beekeeping Club for Agricultural Science

We are looking to start a Beekeeping Club for our Agricultural Science classes and the student body as a whole. We would like to have a hive, or group of hives, on-site and would like to have some input from local beekeepers or people with that kind of experience. We are looking to our community of parents and Old Boys for interest. If anyone would like to contribute anything from actual hives or equipment, to knowledge and time, please contact, Chris Greaney.

Year 12 Business Studies

On our inaugural Year 12 Market Day, we witnessed outstanding success. Students showcased their talents while generating profits for their selected charities. Beyond the financial gains, the highlight was the opportunity for students to interact with our local Member of Parliament, David Seymour. His visit left a lasting impression, as he commended the students for their enthusiasm and commitment. We are excited to announce that our next Market Day is scheduled for Saturday 4 May 2024 at the Parnell Markets again.

Year 8 Trip to the Museum

This week, Year 8 pupils visited Auckland Museum for a combined Social Studies, English and Science trip. Each class had a session with an educator, learning about the many volcanoes that Auckland has been built on. Boys also had the opportunity to learn more about what life was like living in the trenches in WWI and enjoyed trying on and playing with a range of real artifacts. The microscopes were a popular attraction when groups had the opportunity to explore the museum. A special thanks to all parent helpers, the trip couldn't have happened without you.

Arts and Culture

House Haka Competition

The Whakataetae House competition was held earlier this week. Judges for the Whakataetae were Ms Jess Walker, Mr Mat Taare and Mr Ben Bacon with Mr O'Donnell the scrutineer.

The competition was fierce with the teams displaying what Mr Taare later described to the boys as ‘vigorous’, ‘proud’, ‘ordered’ and ‘spirited’. He believed it was carried out with a ‘great sense of tradition’ and focus.

Ultimately, a battle raged between the defending champion Marcellin, and Coolahan. Results for the Houses were Stephen with 76 points from a possible 100, followed by Pompallier 78, Lenihan 82.5, Basil 83, Marcellin 89 and Coolahan taking the day with 92.

Many thanks to the boys for their participation, staff who assisted in their Houses and to Matua Ben Christie particularly for his work behind the scenes ensuring another generation of Sacred boys know and understand the importance of this cultural event.

The event was held for all Years 7 to 10, as well as Championship only, selected entry race, for our senior distance runners. All runners competed over a two-lap, three-kilometre course around the school fields. Conditions were near perfect with firm ground conditions on a warm day with light breezes. Congratulations to Marcellin House for taking the honours on the day.

Special congratulations also go to the following boys, for their outstanding individual results, placing Top-6 in their respective events:
These boys and others will now go through to compete at representative fixtures occurring next term for the Year 9-13 boys, and later in the year for the Year 7 & 8’s.
We wish them all the best, and with what they showed on Wednesday, they will certainly be giving the other schools a good ‘run’ for their money! To view all photos from Cross-Country please click here.

College Information

SHC Fair

Since early this year, our Saturdays have been filled with the sight of Fair goods being dropped off, showcasing the commitment of our PTA, parent helpers, teachers, and boys, all ending in a very successful Fair held last Sunday.

The Fair itself is a lively celebration, featuring an array of food stalls, games, second-hand treasures, and books. Our quick-fire raffle, fuelled by donations from our boys and their parents on the non-uniform day, adds an extra layer of excitement, with frozen chickens, food items, chocolates, and alcohol among the coveted prizes. This stall generated one of the largest amounts of money from the Fair due to the great sales skills of the Prefects and other team members.

We extend our deepest gratitude to all of our sponsors, our PTA, parents and past parents, stall managers and students. The Sacred Heart Fair was a huge success and the money raised will go back into the College throughout this year on the many projects, trips, and events to support our students.

We hope to confirm the total amount raised and announce the Class & House winners early in Term 2. To view all of the photos from the Fair, please visit our website.
