Intercessory Prayer Monthly Meeting will take place on 25 April at 10.30am in the Lady Chapel.
Scam Email Alert - Please be aware that there is currently a scam email in circulation which appears to come from Kelvin asking for help. If you respond, a second email will ask you to send money. Please ignore, however convincing it might look (e.g., naming other genuine church members), and delete without opening. Nobody connected with the church would ever ask for money in this way.

Donations for flowers in church - We welcome financial donations from church members, as we know that you appreciate the more extensive arrangements we create. It is also a lovely way to remember a loved one at any time. Donations can be made by cash in a labelled Gift Aid envelope or sent by BACS (see below for bank details) with a reference of ‘Church Flowers’. If you have a gift aid form in place we will claim the GA on your donation and add it back to the Flowers Fund.

BACS CAF BANK, Sort 405240 Acc 00016766. Don't forget if you are a UK tax payer you can gift aid any payment.
Christian Aid  Week  retiring collection.  Our retiring  collection for Christian Aid Week  will be held on Sunday 12 May. As there is no house to house collection, this is one of our main means of collection. Governments are reducing overseas aid, yet alarmingly the need grows ever greater. Please  give as generously as you are able. Thank you very much for your on going support and generosity. The children of Gaza,  the Yemen and the Ukraine rely on us, to ensure they do not go to bed hungry.
Thank you. Claire
Annual Church meetings The Annual Parish Meeting and the Annual Parochial Church Meeting will be held on Saturday 18 May at 9.30am. Anybody on the civil electoral roll for the parish and anybody on the church electoral roll may attend and vote at the Annual Parish Meeting, the sole purpose of which is to elect churchwardens for the following year. Only those on the church electoral roll may attend and vote at the Annual Parochial Church Meeting, the purpose of which is to receive the Annual Accounts and the Annual Report on the church fabric and church activities for the previous (calendar) year and to elect PCC members.

In preparation for the meetings and as required by law to do so, we are undertaking a revision of the church Electoral Roll. This revision will be completed by 30 April. If you are not already on the Electoral Roll and would like to be, application forms are available in the South Porch. For further information on the Electoral Roll visit https://stlaurences.org.uk/the-electoral-roll/ and if you have any questions please speak to Dick Franks

Nomination Forms – Nomination forms for Churchwarden, PCC Member and Deanery Synod Representative are now available in church. Dick and Lesley would be delighted to speak to anyone considering standing for election to any of these roles to explain what is involved.

Shropshire Historic Churches Trust - As a member of Shropshire Historic Churches Trust, which gave us a £6,000 grant last year towards the heating repairs, St Laurence’s receives an invitation to SHCT’s Annual Meeting.

This year’s meeting will be held at St Alkmund’s, Shrewsbury SY1 1UL at 2.30pm on Thursday 13 June 2024 followed by a talk on the church.  For details of the meeting and other future SHCT events (church tours of North Shropshire, South Shropshire and Radnorshire, Open Gardens, Ride + Stride) visit Shropshire Historic Churches Trust (shropshirehct.org.uk)

A charity close to Nick's heart, he says:
"At 69 years and 8 days old on 21 April 24 it will be a challenge to run 26.2 miles. I have a strict training programme and intend to raise money for my chosen charity - Hands Together Ludlow. Combining with the money I raised for my previous attempt I am only £64 short of £5,000 for Hands Together Ludlow! Obviously it would be fantastic for the Charity if I could just clear the 5K barrier"

Hands Together Ludlow is OUR local charity. It works with partners, stakeholders and volunteers to create a more equal community in and around Ludlow by reducing poor health, social isolation and financial hardship. These interventions are SO necessary with the present financial uncertainty. It is a charity that reaches out across our local community to relieve a wide range of need.

Notes from the Choir Vestry - The season of Eastertide covers some 50 days, between Easter Day and the great feast of Pentecost. The first reference to it is in the early 3rd century, when it is mentioned by Tertullian (a prolific early Christian writer from Carthage). It is connected to the Jewish Festival of Weeks – ‘Shabuoth’ – which is a 2-day harvest celebration period culminating in the day of Pentecost. As we know, rituals and symbols are an important part of our worship, and during the season of Eastertide the Easter candle (‘The Paschal Candle’) is lit for each service, with Alleluias abounding wherever possible! Having experienced some fabulously dramatic and intense music during Holy Week, the music of Eastertide can be uplifting and joyful. Composers have taken some important Latin hymns and sequences as the basis of their works, three of which we can explore a little. (A sequence is the restatement of a motif or longer melodic (or harmonic) passage at a higher or lower pitch in the same voice.)

‘O filii et filiae’ (‘O sons and daughters’) is a Christian hymn celebrating Easter, and is attributed to the 15th century Franciscan friar Jean Tisserand.  Here we have the plainsong version, followed by an arrangement by Walford Davies, then a version performed by the choir and organ at Notre Dame. Finally the version by Martin Baker, former Master of Music at Westminster Cathedral – a setting of the familiar tune, but packed with energy and harmonic interest!

Another one of the symbols of Easter is water, used in the Easter Vigil, and in baptismal rituals. ‘Vidi aquam’ (‘I saw water flowing out from the Temple, from its right side, Alleluia’) is an antiphon, sung early on in the Mass, and often accompanying the ‘Asperges’, the ritual where the celebrant sprinkles the congregation with baptismal water. It can be sung throughout Eastertide. The plainsong is followed by versions by contemporary composers Matthew Martin and James MacMillan, in a setting based in mood on Tallis’s ‘Spem in alium’.

The sequence ‘Victimae paschali laudes’ (‘Let Christians offer sacrificial praises to the Passover victim’). Sometimes attributed to Wipo of Burgundy, chaplain to the Holy Roman Emperor Conrad II, this is one of only four medieval sequences after the discussions and examinations of the Council of Trent (1545-1563). The other sequences are the ‘Lauda Sion’ (Corpus Christi), ‘Dies irae’ (from the Requiem Mass) and the ‘Veni Sancte Spiritus’(Pentecost). Once again, we start with the plainsong, before moving to an 8-voice setting by 16th century composer Palestrina, and rounding off with a return to Notre Dame for another joyous reading of this great melody!
