Welcome to the March newsletter!

This month's feature article looks into a fascinating adaptive reuse phenomenon taking place in England: the repurposing of unused cinemas as places of worship by different faith groups.

Have a look at our FRH & members' news for the latest updates of the network such as the Call for Papers for the 2024 FRH Conference, our upcoming satellite event for the NEB Festival 2024, the series of interfaith concerts launched in Cantabria (Spain), and the latest exhibition at the Lehnin Monastery in Germany.

The European news section highlights the Red List of Endangered Crafts published for the first time in Germany, the training courses of European Heritage Volunteers, the second call for individual mobility of Culture Moves Europe, the launch of the Heritage Library, and the publication Notre-Dame de Paris: a multidisciplinary scientific site.

We conclude in our Religiana section with a guide on religious heritage of Bodø (Norway), the only European Capital of Culture above the Arctic Circle.

See you next month!

THEATRES OF CHANGE: RETHINKING CINEMAS AS PLACES OF WORSHIP, BY KATE JORDAN
This month's article looks at the reuse of historic buildings, but in a way that we are not used to in the field of religious heritage: the reuse of secular buildings as places of worship. The article condenses the findings of the Moving Pictures project, led by Dr Kate Jordan and Dr Julie Marsh in the United Kingdom, which has examined the (not new) phenomenon of how diaspora communities seeking spaces for worship have converted disused English cinemas into religious buildings for different faiths, breathing new life into these historic sites and restoring meaning to them within the community. Read more about the 97 fascinating repurposed cinemas in England in Kate Jordan's article on our website. READ MORE >>
