Articulating Clear Expectations of Use for AI

Hello, subscribers! Join us this week as we continue our series contemplating how to thoughtfully integrate generative AI tools into language learning contexts.

This series was inspired by UNESCO's 2023 Guidance for Generative AI in Education and Research.

In previous issues, we looked at how AI tools can support both learners and educators. This week, we build on these foundations to discuss how to articulate clear expectations for learners’ use of AI. We discuss implications related to questions of authorship, documentation of source material, and ethics.

Language Learning in a New Digital Era

Here are tips on how to set clear expectations for learners, and help them leverage AI tools!

Ideas for Implementation

The video above is a great starting point for thinking through how you and your team want to utilize artificial intelligence in your classrooms. This meeting protocol will support you in engaging in this discussion.

  1. Before meeting, share the video with the colleagues. If more background information is desired, we recommend reading UNESCO’s guidance for generative AI in education. Pay special attention to the controversies articulated (pp. 14-17) and the considerations for articulating a policy framework (pp.24-27).

  2. At the beginning of the meeting, articulate a specific goal for your group. Perhaps you want to develop a citation protocol, articulate a learning activity in which you model how to verify the output created by AI, or both.

  3. Set a timer for five minutes. Allow people to work individually to brainstorm ideas during that time.

  4. Set another timer for ten minutes. During this ten-minute period, share your ideas and document them in a shared space. Circle the ideas that are mentioned more than once, and ask for people to identify their favorite idea with a star during the last minute.

  5. Use the circle and starred items to articulate a draft protocol with your team.

  6. At your next meeting, revisit the protocol and finalize it to share with collaborators around the learning environment.

Generative AI Workshop:
Language Education in the Age of AI

This interactive professional development workshop will provide participants with an overview of foundational concepts related to generative artificial intelligence and the landscape of low- and no-cost tools available to learners and educators.

As part of this overview, participants will consider how to incorporate AI into their own pedagogical design and teaching practices. They will also consider how to support learners in utilizing AI to extend the possibilities of learning.

In service of  these aims, participants will engage these topics:

  • Low- and no-cost AI tool landscape and exploration
  • Affordances of AI in professional practices
  • Affordances of AI in learning contexts
  • The potential and limitations of using AI as an interactive partner
  • Best practices for instruction and learner inquiry
