FROM THE DEACON'S BENCH
Happy Easter! Happy Easter! So we finally greeted each other after the 40 long days of Lent. And now we get another 50 days to say it again and again before we mark the Day of Pentecost. It may take that long for us to let the message go from our lips to our hearts, but what in the world do we mean when we say, “Happy Easter!”? Once we get past the glorious chaos of Easter day, what do we do with this essential message?
In the Prayer Book we read that the liturgy for burial of the dead is an Easter liturgy, which finds all its meaning in the resurrection. It is a liturgy characterized by joy, in the certainty that “neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” It all sounds so good, so hopeful, but oh, but we forget so quickly. There is so much about just living in this world that would separate us daily from the love of God. So it is that we get the feeling that Easter is well past and we are on our own for the time being, little about our lives of much interest or use to the God who rose from the dead. Easter happened to Jesus, yes, but we have to wait until we too are dead to know it for sure. Or so we may secretly think… It is that place where belief crashes headlong into faith.
Ages ago, I was challenged to explain why the resurrection matters to those of us grappling with what it means to be human, all the while living in a deeply flawed and dangerous world. And what I said, I still believe: that Jesus took the worst that people can do and showed us, in his very body, that God will not allow evil to win, that God can and will redeem it all, that God’s love is greater than anything we may face.
NOTHING will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. So, I wish you a Happy Easter!

Reflections on Easter: Theme and Variations
9:30 a.m. Adult Forum in the Chapel
April 7–May 12
Join us in the chapel during the Easter season as we discover the wonderful variations found in the life-changing theme of Easter. Borrowing a concept from musical compositions, we will begin with one theme: Easter. Different Easter stories from Scripture will be shared, and we will listen each week as a new variation flows forth and transforms us. Variations include forgiveness, reconciliation, joy, and peace.

In the Spirit: Monday, April 8 at the Sandfly 5-Spot
Second and Fourth Mondays, 5:30 p.m.
"In the Spirit" is a discussion group for those who seek to deepen their faith through meaningful conversations. Join us this Monday at The 5-Spot in Sandfly (7360 Skidaway Rd), where you can grab a drink or a bite as we spend time together. We'll gather at 5:30 p.m. and begin our discussion at 6:00.
This week's topic: Losing My Religion
The increasing decline in church attendance throughout recent decades has been well-documented. Today, about 30% of US adults attend religious services regularly (down from 42% in the early 2000s), and in 2019, for the first time, US church membership fell below the majority. Today, "nones," people who claim no specific religious affiliation, make up a the largest single group in the US.
While Christ Church has been fortunate in recent years to avoid direct experience with this trend, the nationwide implications are still difficult to ignore. What’s behind this exodus? How might the Church respond?
Questions to Ponder:
- Why do you think people are leaving church? How have you noticed this changing landscape?
- Have you ever left an aspect of religion or religious expression? What led to that departure?
- Have you ever returned to an aspect of religion that you had previously left behind? What brought you to return?
- If you’ve stayed put, what convinces you to stay?
- How do you think the Church is being called to meet the needs of a changing world?
If you have questions or would like to receive emails about upcoming In the Spirit topics, please contact the Rev. Samantha McKean.

Christ Church Book Group
Thursday, April 11, 10:30 a.m.
Join us each second Thursday in the undercroft as we explore insights from thought-provoking works. This month's selection is The Art of Losing, by Alice Zeniter.
Alice Zeniter’s The Art of Losing is a powerful, moving family novel that spans three generations across seventy years and two shores of the Mediterranean Sea. It is a resonant people’s history of Algeria and its diaspora. It is a story of how we carry on in the face of loss: loss of country, identity, language, connection. Most of all, it is an immersive, riveting excavation of the inescapable legacies of colonialism, immigration, family, and war.
