Hustings Begin for New Board of Deputies President and Vice-Presidents

This week, hustings have been taking place in Manchester, Leeds and Glasgow so that members of the UK's regional communities are able to hear from the candidates for President, Vice-President and Treasurer.

Board of Deputies Chief Executive Michael Wegier said "This is an excellent example of the Board’s democratic process. Each candidate has the opportunity to meet members of the UK’s Jewish community and share their views and plans for the Board's contribution to British Jewish life. We are also looking forward to seeing what is discussed at the London Hustings in May."

DATE CHANGE:
Our previously advertised Vigil for the hostages will now take place on Tuesday 9th April. We will gather in Central London for a mass vigil for the more than 100 men, women, and children who have been held hostage for over six months since the 7th October massacre.

CST and police will be present. The event is organised by the  Board of Deputies of British Jews, The Jewish Leadership Council, UJIA, Magen David Adom, and The Hostages and Missing Families Forum UK and the Israeli Embassy.
Deputy Prime Minister Meeting

President Marie van der Zyl, Senior Vice-President David Mendoza-Wolfson, Chief Executive Michael Wegier and Director of Public Affairs Daniel Sugarman met with the Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden CBE MP to discuss several initiatives of importance to the Jewish Community, the rise in antisemitism following the 7th October attacks and PFLP and AAMB proscription.
International

President Marie van der Zyl, David Mendoza-Wolfson and Parliamentary and International Relations Officer
David Robinson met with Jordan’s Ambassador to the UK, HE Manar Dabbas.

Community

Marie attended the Elstree and Borehamwood Jewish community's Am Yisrael Chai event honouring the Jewish Diaspora's contributions to advocacy, volunteering and activism since the 7th October Hamas terror attacks on Israel.

Vice President Amanda Bowman took a group from the Defence Division, as well as Honorary Officers Marie and Michael Ziff to meet with senior members of the Metropolitan Police and visit the Lambeth Operations and Call Centre. Among other issues, we challenged the MPS communications during marches and made it clear that any swastika at a rally such as this is highly provocative. We asked for urgent clarification that this will be communicated more widely throughout the service.

Digital Communications Officer Adam Ma’anit gave a talk at the Brighton & Hove Reform Synagogue about his family’s long and painful history of tragedy as a result of terrorism, most recently on October 7 when his 18-year-old cousin Ma’ayan was murdered and her father Tsachi taken captive to Gaza where he still remains as hostage of Hamas. If your synagogue or organisation would like to invite Adam to speak, please contact him directly at: adam.maanit@bod.org.uk

A regional Jewish Representative Councils Chairs and Presidents meeting, convened by the Board of Deputies, was held and chaired by Vice President Edwin Shuker. Sophie Dunoff, Chief Executive of University Jewish Chaplaincy, delivered a presentation about her organisation and what services and assistance it offers students, especially since 7 October. Also in attendance, representing the Board of Deputies, were Deputy and Community Engagement Manager Sara Radivan and Education Officer Anna Silver. Representing their communities were Ruth Jacobs (Birmingham), Michelle Hayward (Liverpool), Jeremy Michelson (Greater Manchester), Simon Henig, Laurence Kahn and Sheila Gewolb (South Wales), Ed Horwich (Jewish Small Communities Network), Nicola Livingston (SCoJeC) and Judith Prinsley (Jewish Care).
