Anxiety & Depression in Childhood and Adolescence

A reminder to purchase your tickets for the Anxiety & Depression presentation next Wednesday 10 April. In this talk, Nathan discusses the fact that both genes and environment play a part in the likelihood of a child experiencing a level of anxiety that causes concern. There are many risk and resiliency factors that can be looked at when considering the appropriate way to respond to maximise your child’s positive outcomes. If a child suffers a trauma or has several risk factors you can mitigate the negative effects of this by increasing a child’s resiliency factors.
You can purchase tickets to Nathan's presentation using the link below:

Arts and Culture

Polyfest, 2024 - Tongan Cultural Group – “Ve’eve’e ‘o e Mafu Topu Tapu”

“Looking to our past to determine our future”.

With our eyes set on the future and hearts warmed by the past, we at Sacred Heart College are brimming with pride as we recount the colourful tapestry of events at this year's ASB Polyfest.

Our Tongan Cultural Group, Ve’eve’e ‘o e Mafu Topu Tapu, eagerly embraced the spotlight. Their journey to excellence began with a triumph, as Kisione Fifita, the leader of the Tongan group, secured an impressive third place in the Year 13 speech competition, setting a high bar for the team.

When the time came, our performers did not merely step onto the stage; they claimed it. Their inaugural performance, the Sika, clinched first place, a testament to their talent and hard work. The Ma’ulu’ulu, too, shone brightly, standing tall among esteemed peers. While we may not have garnered major accolades, our performance was undeniably robust, and we carry forth the pride of our school.

Our heartfelt thanks go out to each student, family member, and mentor who played a pivotal role in the fruition of our Tongan Cultural Group's aspirations. Your support was the cornerstone of our ability to showcase the vibrancy of our culture at Sacred Heart College. A special note of gratitude is extended to the Siale family, Tukia, and 'Akata, and the selfless parent volunteers for their unwavering dedication.

Rowing - End of Season wrap-up

Maadi
A 28 strong squad of SHC Rowers attended the Maadi Regatta at Lake Ruataniwha, Twizel. A magnificent week with all boys achieving greatness on the water. We are extremely proud of our rowers for their commitment, uncompromising stamina, and belief in themselves as they took on the challenge in the mighty south. Of note was the thrilling performance of the U15 coxed 4 repechage race with team members James Fleming, Kupu John Amoamo, Xavier Roshan, Oliver Francis coxed by Will Vaughan, and their unbelievable determination winning that race to secure their spot in the A final.

Another strong and determined performance came from Henry Johnston, who went through a gruelling 3 races (heat, repechage, semi-final) to secure his spot in the U16 single sculls A final. Henry proved not only his ability with his physical strength and technical capability, but the strength of his mind that was set on making that final. Henry had only raced in a single skull twice before.

Our Novice U18 coxed 8 crew of Ethan Fillmore, Tom Lieshout, Keiron Barrington, William Smith, Solomon Dykes, Oscar McGowan, Roman Andrews, Xavier Roshan and cox Ben Baker who have had a magical season, were rewarded for their hard work and determination placing third to bring home a NZ Bronze medal. Our congratulations to this crew as well as to Cole Ellis and George Marshall who came home with a silver medal in the U17 coxless pair oars.

Overall, of the 15 events SHC Rowing entered in, the boys collectively made six A finals and four B finals, a terrific result and one everyone involved is extremely proud of.

This draws us to the end of the 2024 rowing season. Team Captain Henry O’Neill, in his final season, has led his squad of 37 rowers with passion and enthusiasm throughout. Congratulations boys, a season to look back on with pride.

London International Youth Science Forum

Aidan Goh (Year 13) has been selected, with a small number of other students, to participate in the London International Youth Science Forum (LIYSF) in July/August this year. This is a not-for-profit enterprise with HRH The Princess Royal as the royal patron.

Last year Joseph Bahoo (’23) attended and shared his experience in October's edition of Confortare. Attendees have the unique opportunity to meet and collaborate with other student leaders from around the world to better understand global problems and gain valuable insights on how science can be used to help. They also gain the invaluable opportunity to hear from a Nobel Peace Prize winner. This will be a great experience and opportunity for students to grow and then share experiences when they return, so that other students may benefit.

Aidan is asking the Sacred Heart community for support by setting up Givealittle page: https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/help-aidan-get-to-london-international-youth. If you can make even a small donation, this will go a long way to help him experience this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Science Discovery Centre - Traffic Management Plan

Next week we will start to see progress with our new Science Discovery Centre with site fencing being installed from Monday 8 April. This will be predominately from halfway down Gate 3 driveway to Pompallier Block and back up beside parts of the Hostel. This encloses the main construction site. There will be NO ACCESS for cars, therefore parking will no longer be available from beside the Hostel flag poles, right down to and including Pompallier Block. The parking for the College vans will be relocated to the Aquatic Centre.

Parking at the bottom of Gate 4 (Aquatic Centre and the Gym) will also be affected. The current diagonal parking will be removed to allow space for the service road and large trucks to make a wide turn to exit up via Gate 4.

Construction vehicles will be entering through Gate 3, with their designated exit via the service road and out through Gate 4. We acknowledge the narrowness of Gate 4 driveway and therefore will have a traffic plan in place to ensure the safety of everyone using this driveway.

While we appreciate the disturbance to our College site may at times be frustrating, we must remember the ultimate result will be a state-of-the-art Science Discovery Centre and purpose-built Archives space. We are truly excited about this project and the amazing opportunities and facilities it will bring to our College community and most importantly our students.
