Why is Ephemera Not Ephemeral? An Online Collage Workshop with Jeannie Hua

Join us for an online collage workshop with Las Vegas artist Jeannie Hua. Our memories on paper have context. Jeannie will teach us about the history of collage art and show us how our family memories help shape who we are. Participants are invited to bring copies of their photos, paintings, drawings, and more, as we cut, write, and glue on paper. Registration is required.

"And Then They Came For Us" - Documentary Screening and Discussion 
May 28 | 1:00 - 2:30 pm | Clark County Library 

Join us for a special screening of the award-winning documentary And Then They Came For Us, about the unjust incarceration of over 120,000 Japanese Americans during World War II, followed by an open forum discussion with the audience. In partnership with the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District.

A Black Springs Homecoming Film Screening and Conversation
May 10 | 7:00 pm| St. Thomas Aquinas Cathedral, Reno
Join Nevada Humanities and Saint Thomas Aquinas Cathedral for a screening of the award-winning documentary A Black Springs Homecoming: Finding History. The 27-minute film will screen first, followed by a conversation and Q+A with historians Demetrice Dalton and Helen Townsell.  Registration is required as seating is limited.

All in the Family - Collage Workshop with Jeannie Hua
May 25 | 2:00 - 3:00 pm | Summerlin Library, Las Vegas

Join us for a collage workshop and to learn about the history of collage art. Participants are invited to bring copies of their photos, letters, and/or other documents, as we work on cutting, gluing, and drawing to better understand the context of our memories on paper. This event is free, but limited seating is available on a first come, first-served basis.

Sagebrush to Sandstone Events

Wild Life, Wild Skies - Nature Walk and Creative Writing 
May 5 | 9:30 - 12:00 pm| Desert National Wildlife Refuge 

Join us for a day of poetry and outdoor exploration at the Desert National Wildlife Refuge. Local poet JM Huck and Dale Etheridge Planetarium staff will guide participants in experiencing and appreciating Nevada landscape, as well as the wildlife within. This event is free. Space is limited and registration is required.

Nature Journaling and Bird Sketching Workshop 
May 15| 4:00 - 6:00 pm| Bartley Ranch Park, Reno 

Join us for a nature journaling and sketching workshop, in partnership with the Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation. We will sketch bird species found in Nevada, by breaking them down into easily drawn shapes and adding notes on behaviors, postures and colors. No drawing experience is needed for this class, and all artistic levels are welcomed. Space for this event is limited and registration in advance is required.

Sagebrush to Sandstone at the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve
May 19 | 9:30 am - 1:00 pm| Henderson, NV 

Join us at the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve for two Sagebrush to Sandstone events, in partnership with the City of Henderson.
Separate registration is required for each event. Henderson Bird Preserve staff will provide a welcome to the preserve and additional bird information at 9:30 am.

10:00 am - 11:30 am Nature Poetry Workshop with Heather Lang-Cassera
Celebrate birds as we write in a beautiful and encouraging environment. This workshop will explore poetic forms ranging from blackout poetry to ekphrasis, all steeped in the art of close looking. Poets of all levels will go home having written new poems in their own unique voices.

11:30 am - 1:00 pm Paper Bird Workshop with Bobbie Ann Howell

The hands-on art workshop will cover several folded paper bird patterns, cutting, folding, and coloring and detail design options. Nevada is part of the Pacific Flyway that many species of birds use to rest and feed during their annual migration as well as the many native species that call Nevada home.

The Hidden Faces of Work: Behind Las Vegas' Non-Stop Economy

Nevada Humanities Exhibition Gallery - 1017 South 1st Street, #190, Las Vegas

Nevada Humanities presents The Hidden Faces of Work: Behind Las Vegas’ Non-Stop Economy, an exhibition featuring the photography, reflections, media, and creative work of students at the Hank Greenspun School of Journalism and Media Studies at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Developed during a class project, this exhibition explores the city’s invisible laborers and work, their physical burdens and emotional toll, and their experiences making sense of work and life. This exhibition is curated by Julian Kilker, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Emerging Technologies, at the Hank Greenspun School of Journalism and Media Studies.

Join us for a special four hour collaborative stream with folklorists Dr. Dom Tartaglia and Daisy Ahlstone as we make Cincinnati chili together and discuss regional foodways, folklore, and more. Audience questions and comments are encouraged and welcome!
