Decolonial Digital Humanities Summer Course
Digital Humanities Summer Minor & Certificate Program

Since 2018, D-Lab has been organizing the Digital Humanities Summer Minor and Certificate Program. This program teaches you how to ask timeless questions and answer them using today’s tools. It offers you the skills to make your work communicable and relevant in today’s digital world – skills you’ll use as a scholar and as a professional.

This year, we are offering a brand new course on Decolonial Digital Humanities! This course approaches Digital Humanities tools through lenses of Decolonial studies, Black Feminist studies, Indigenous studies, Cultural studies, and Environmental studies. Topics include learning how to productively critique, organize and manage digital storytelling projects, while working with a variety of entry-level DH research methodologies and tools such as Voyant, ArcGIS Story Maps, and others. This is a great course for anyone who wants to learn to do critical, equity-driven computational research!

LLM Working Group
Hosted by D-Lab Berkeley Graduate Division

The LLM Working Group is a community founded to facilitate conversations about Large Language Models (LLMs) and Generative AI within academia. This 4-part series will provide fundamental knowledge of LLMs, and generate conversation about the promises and challenges of LLMs in different facets of academic work. Sessions will be interactive, encouraging participants to share their experiences, pose questions, and collaboratively explore the challenges and potential of these technologies in their respective fields. We encourage everyone to participate, regardless of their experience level with LLMs and GenAI. The LLM Working Group is a welcoming and supportive community for all.

In our fourth and last session for the semester, Researching with LLMsDouglas Guilbeault and Chris Soria will delve into the use of LLMs as part of the researcher toolkit. We will discuss the use of APIs, prompt engineering, and other techniques to integrate LLMs into research.

Enhancing Research Transparency Inspired by Grounded Theory

Grounded theory, a powerful tool for qualitative analysis, can enhance data science research by improving transparency and impact. Researchers can create a vivid record of their process by meticulously documenting the entire research journey, including the decisions they make and the corresponding rationale behind them, from initial data exploration to developing and refining theories. Embracing grounded theory principles, such as iterative coding and constant comparison, can help data scientists build robust, data-driven theories while ensuring transparency throughout the research process. This approach makes research more replicable and understandable and invites others to engage with the work, fostering collaboration and constructive critique, ultimately elevating the value and reach of their findings.
