 Remaining Spring CCD Schedule

Monday

April 29th - Chapter 24
May 6th - Chapter 25 - LAST CLASS

Tuesday
April 30th - Chapter 24
May 7th - Chapter 25 - LAST CLASS

Only 2 more classes!
As spring sports start, many students find that they need to leave CCD a few minutes early in order to make it to their games. If this is the case with your child, please email Colleen McDonald or send your child in with a note indicating the time he or she needs to be picked up. We will note it on the attendance sheet and the catechist can send your child down to the cafeteria for dismissal.
Homeschooling Connection

Week of April 28th
Chapter 25

That's it! The last chapter! If you have been keeping up with the recommended pacing for the year, you'll be done with CCD this week. If you still have a few more chapters to go, no worries, exit interviews will start in a few weeks, so you have time to finish.
Attn: Parents of All our 8th Grade Students

Chris Kaiser, OLS's Youth Minister who administers the high school Youth Group program for the parish, will be in attendance on the final day of class: Monday, May 6th and Tuesday, May 7th. He will be talking to the kids about what they can expect the following year in Youth Group and while preparing for Confirmation. He will also lead the kids in an activity. We hope all of our 8th graders can be in attendance. If your child is one of our 8th grade homeschooling students, they are welcome and encouraged to attend either the Monday or the Tuesday session.

Mrs. McDonald emailed a letter to 8th grade parents with regard to Youth Group last week, but if you missed it, just click on the button below.

Allergies

The final day of class is nearly upon us and that's surely something worth celebrating. As a result, many classes have snacks or parties on the last day of CCD (May 6th and 7th). Please make sure your child's allergy information is up to date with our office and your child's catechist. Thank you for partnering with us to keep the kids in our care safe.
Ask Your Child...

Ask your children if they can guess why Mrs. Noll gave out stickers with a man carrying a stack of books on them. Which of the students carrying books (representing the negatives of doing a task) did we decide would give up first - the person who loves what they are doing or the person who is just doing a task because they have to? (Person who loves what they are doing will have more stamina.) What does the hired man do at the sight of danger? (Runs away.) What does the Good Shepherd do? (Gives up his life for his sheep.) Who is the Good Shepherd? (Jesus.) Why did he allow himself to be crucified on a cross? (Because he loves us.)
Next Family Mass
Sunday, April 28th
10:00 am Mass

Join us at this Sunday's Family Mass! There are numerous opportunities for kids to get involved in our liturgy. For example, this week one of our 5th grade students is responsible for proclaiming the first two readings at Mass. What an awesome privilege! If you would like to be one of our readers, greeters, ushers etc., please reach out to Colleen McDonald. Thanks in advance and I look forward to worshipping with you and then eating a few donuts in St. Joseph's Hall after Mass.

SAINT / FEAST OF THE WEEK
St. Mark, Evangelist
Feast Day: April 25th
Patron of: Notaries, Venice

Most of what we know about Mark comes directly from the New Testament. He is usually identified with the Mark of Acts 12:12. When Saint Peter escaped from prison, he went to the home of Mark’s mother.

Paul and Barnabas took him along on the first missionary journey, but for some reason Mark returned alone to Jerusalem. It is evident, from Paul’s refusal to let Mark accompany him on the second journey despite Barnabas’s insistence, that Mark had displeased Paul. Because Paul later asks Mark to visit him in prison, we may assume the trouble did not last long.

The oldest and the shortest of the four Gospels, the Gospel of Mark emphasizes Jesus’s rejection by humanity while being God’s triumphant envoy. Probably written for gentile converts in Rome—after the death of Peter and Paul sometime between A.D. 60 and 70—Mark’s Gospel is the gradual manifestation of a “scandal”: a crucified Messiah.

Evidently a friend of Mark—calling him “my son”—Peter is only one of this Gospel’s sources, others being the Church in Jerusalem (Jewish roots), and the Church at Antioch (largely Gentile).

Like another Gospel writer Luke, Mark was not one of the 12 apostles. We cannot be certain whether he knew Jesus personally. Some scholars feel that the evangelist is speaking of himself when describing the arrest of Jesus in Gethsemane: “Now a young man followed him wearing nothing but a linen cloth about his body. They seized him, but he left the cloth behind and ran off naked” (Mark 14:51-52).

Others hold Mark to be the first bishop of Alexandria, Egypt. Venice, famous for the Piazza San Marco, claims Mark as its patron saint; the large basilica there is believed to contain his remains.

St. Mark Feast Day Ideas

CCD is too short to do all of the fun things we'd like to do with your kids. Never fear though, Catholic Icing has compiled some great ideas to help you in your role of primary educator in matters of the faith. Click HERE to view coloring pages and craft projects for the Feast of St. Mark.
In the Liturgy of the Word, the Church feeds the people of God from the table of his Word. Previewing the readings before Mass then is then a bit like looking over the menu before you get to a restaurant: you have a better idea of what you can expect so that you can enter into the experience more fully prepared. And like a good discussion during a meal, discussing the readings and how they can be applied to your family's daily life helps your family to truly go out and proclaim the gospel after leaving the church.

Is Your Heart Yearning for More?

In the Religious Education Department, we get numerous casual inquiries throughout the year from parents who aren't Catholic and want to know more about the possibility of joining their children in the sacraments. Please know that we are here to help you discern the next steps in YOUR faith journey. If you or your spouse has a desire to come into the fullness of Faith in the Catholic Church next Easter, please call Sr. Mary Selina at (973) 763-5454 or email her at passociate07@gmail.com. If you are a Catholic but have never been Confirmed, please call and start the process in which the Holy Spirit will come to you in a powerful way as to help you live your Catholic faith more deeply.

OLS has about 8 or 9 individuals who are in the process of exploring what coming into the fullness of the faith entails. Join them!

Catholic Trivia

Question: Which of the following symbols is associated with St. Mark the Evangelist?
a) Winged Man
b) Winged Lion
c) Winged Oxen
d) Eagle

Answer:A winged lion is Mark’s symbol. The lion derives from Mark’s description of John the Baptist as a “voice of one crying out in the desert” (Mark 1:3), which artists compared to a roaring lion. The wings come from the application of Ezekiel’s vision of four winged creatures to the evangelists.
Joke of the Week

"Knock knock."
"Who's there?"
"Adore."
"Adore who?"
"Adore is between us, so please open up!"
