Dear <<First Name>>,

This Tuesday was BC Book Day 2024! This year we celebrated 10 years of honouring our local literacy landscape and authors. My bookshelves and heart are full of all the lovely conversations with fellow book lovers.

As the Minister responsible for Libraries, I encourage everyone to pick up their favourite literature and explore our wonderful BC libraries. Let’s read!

"Books and doors are the same thing. You open them, and you go through into another world." -Jeanette Winterson
This past Sunday, the One Song Orchestra from Taiwan brought their extraordinary talents to the Burnaby Shadbolt Centre, and I was honoured to be the host of their evening concert!

One Song Orchestra is renowned for their renditions of Taiwanese folk tunes and fusion pieces blending classical music. The majority of their repertoire is curated by their talented conductor, Che-Yi Lee. Thank you to North America Taiwanese Women's Association for making the concert possible!

It was a joy to share this cultural experience with friends from diverse ethnic backgrounds. Music truly has a way of bridging cultures and bringing people together!
Here are some things I'd like to share with you from the past week:

More priority communities selected to deliver more homes

We’re addressing the housing crisis with our municipal partners so thousands more affordable homes can be built for people who need them.

These communities are in high-growth, high-need regions of B.C., where many communities are taking action to deliver more homes quicker

Our goal for the next 20 communities is to build on the work they are already doing, while they continue to implement recent provincial legislative changes.

Stronger local-disaster response will keep people safer

Local emergency operations centres are crucial for coordinating emergency response.

As we move into wildfire season, we know many communities may need to activate their emergency response centres to support people in their areas.

Funding will help communities support responders on the ground and better protect people.

B.C. works with communities to boost wildfire prevention, preparedness

People are feeling the impacts of climate change and longer wildfire seasons, and we know that the only way forward is to work together.

Communities bring critical knowledge, skills and relationships to the table, and we’re growing their role in wildfire preparedness.

The Wildfire Resiliency and Training Summit is a valuable opportunity for hundreds of leaders and first responders from across B.C. to delve into the insights gained from the 2023 wildfire season and better prepare for the upcoming season.

2024 minimum wage increases confirmed

We know that global inflation has been challenging for British Columbians, and especially for B.C’s lowest paid workers.

On June 1, 2024, B.C.’s lowest-paid workers will get a pay raise, when the general minimum wage increases from $16.75 to $17.40 per hour.

By tying minimum wage increases to the rate of inflation, we’re helping provide certainty and predictability for workers and employers.

Premier’s, minister’s statements on Earth Day

Earth Day is a time to honour this incredible place we call home and renew our commitment to preserving it for future generations.

Here in B.C., we’re fortunate to be surrounded by natural beauty, from the rugged coastline to the towering mountains to the lush forests.

We’re a leader in climate action, and we are ramping up our efforts to address the growing threats of a changing climate.

Canadians of South Asian Heritages Museum Questionnaire

The Province has launched a public engagement to inform the vision for a new museum or cultural centre in B.C. This museum or cultural centre will highlight the histories, cultures, and contributions to British Columbia from Canadians of diverse South Asian heritages.
