‘HEAD’ Lines
Our New Headteacher
Dear Parents/Carers
You will already be aware from the letter you received on Wednesday of this week from our Chair of Governors that Mrs Erin Sudds has been appointed as my successor and will commence her post on the 1st September.
I wanted to write this week to assure all parents and carers that everything that is good about John Hanson will remain so in September and long in to the future.
Mrs Sudds will, I am sure, come with some of her own ideas and ways of doing things, but I am confident that these will only further enhance the opportunities available to your child during their 5 years with us.
I have already been in regular communications with Mrs Sudds and will be meeting with her regularly face-to-face to make sure there is a smooth handover.
Enjoy the weekend with your children even though I think the sun may be hiding for most of it!
Regards
Russell Stevens
Headteacher
This week we have been celebrating William Shakespeare in the LRC. Just five years before John Hanson School was established, it is thought that he was born on April 23rd 1564. Students have been introduced to a collection of ‘Shakespeare Stories’ - short and accessible retellings of the Bard’s best loved plays. Also available in the LRC are some graphic novel versions of his work that really capture the imagination.
Students can also enter the Quotes Quiz and Word Search until the end of the day on Monday 29th April. All correct entries will be placed in a draw to win a book prize from the LRC.
Answered over a million questions
Another year of brilliance from students in Science with their use of Educake - beating the records set from previous years! Students have already collectively answered over a million questions on Educake - something that took an extra term to achieve by previous years! This puts John Hanson in the top 2% of Educake users nationally. Whilst some of these were set by staff, we would not have reached a million questions without students independently setting themselves questions - over 24,000 in fact. It is fantastic to see students taking such an active role in their own learning and progress. Keep up the good work!

At John Hanson Community School we are committed to providing equality of opportunity for all students and staff, and to providing a working environment free from discrimination, prejudice and harassment.
We encourage respect and consideration for others, and recognise and value the school as a safe place for learning. The staff at John Hanson recognise that inequalities exist in all levels of society and believe, that as educators, we have a crucial role to play in eliminating all forms of discrimination, in particular against anyone with any of the protected characteristic. We promote equality by dealing with bullying and incidents of discrimination immediately and by educating the young people in our care through assemblies, tutor time, PSHE day sessions and group work where appropriate.
This is part of our responsibility in preparing our students for life after school.
Important EDI events over the next week:
29th April International Dance Day. 5th Buddha's Birthday (and enlightenment) known as Vesak.
Words you might not know:
International Dance Day is a celebration day for those who can see the value and importance of the art form "dance", and acts as a wake-up-call for governments, politicians and institutions which have not yet recognised its value. "Vesak", the Day of the Full Moon in the month of May, is the most sacred day to millions of Buddhists around the world. It was on the Day of Vesak two and a half millennia ago, in the year 623 B.C., that the Buddha was born. It was also on the Day of Vesak that the Buddha attained enlightenment, and it was on the Day of Vesak that the Buddha in his eightieth year passed away.
It is when the world comes together on the 8th of March to celebrate women's achievements and reinforce a commitment to women's equality The DEI team will be producing one of these every term for you and your parents to read through – if you have any ideas for content please see Mrs Curtis, Mrs Ferris or Mrs Grinstead.
Please encourage your son/daughter to use their SCHOOL EMAIL for work rather than their own private email. This is important for safeguarding and also some of our messages for students are being sent to school email addresses.
