Côtes du Roussillon & Collioure

Domaine de Bila-Haut (M.Chapoutier)

Michel Chapoutier founded Domaine de Bila Haut in Latour de France, in Roussillon, just outside Perpignon. He has since expanded the domaine to include holdings in the neighnouring village of Lesquerde and more recently, Collioure (the dry wine appellation for Banyuls) on the coast, near the border with Spain. These tremendous value wines were impressive from the start but have been improving incrementally over the last couple of decades. We are able to offer a range of vintages which are all drinking brilliantly now.

2018 Chrysopee, Collioure Blanc

£170.00 per 6 Bot Case, in bond
£223.22 Duty & VAT paid

A rich, powerful wine, with lots of honeyed citrus, white currant, toasted bread, and green almond notes, the 2018 Collioure Chrysopée Blanc hits the palate with full-bodied richness, terrific depth of fruit, no hard edges, and a great finish. 2020-2024

2019 Chrysopee, Collioure Blanc

£170.00 per 6 Bot Case, in bond
£223.22 Duty & VAT paid

The 2019 Collioure Chrysopée Blanc is more open and expressive than the 2020, no doubt due to the extra year in bottle. It has textbook Collioure notes of crushed citrus, tangerine, iodine, and salty, marine-like nuances. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it too has bright acidity, a layered, seamless texture, good concentration, and a fabulous finish. It should continue drinking nicely for another year or three, and then have an interesting evolution over the following decade. I wouldn’t be surprised to see this evolve like a great Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc. The blend is 90% Grenache Gris and 10% Grenache Blanc, all from schists soils, that was aged in equal parts new, once-used, and older demi-muids. 2022-2035

2020 Chrysopee, Collioure Blanc

£170.00 per 6 Bot Case, in bond
£223.22 Duty & VAT paid

Just bottled 10 days before this tasting, the 2020 Collioure Chrysopée Blanc ranks with the finest whites coming from the South of France. A blend of 90% Grenache Gris and 10% Grenache Blanc raised in 30% demi-muids, it offers a vibrant, medium-bodied, fresh, almost chiseled style as well as beautiful melon, honeyed mineral, and pear-like aromas and flavors. I love its mid-palate, and it has a bright, crystalline texture followed by a great finish. Hide bottles for a year of two and enjoy over the following decade. 2023-2033

90% Grenache Gris and 10% Grenache Blanc blended from vineyards planted on very old terraced schist soils. The close proximity to the Mediterranean Sea helps to moderate the climate, bringing freshness and finesse to the wine.

2017 Chrysopee, Collioure Rouge

£160.00 per 6 Bot Case, in bond
£211.22 Duty & VAT paid

I always love this cuvée, and the 2017 Collioure Chrysopée is a great example of the appéllation. Black cherries, framboise, iodine, salty minerality, and plenty of floral notes give way to a medium to full-bodied, elegant, finesse-oriented wine that reminds me of a Côte Rôtie from the southern part of the appellation. 2020-2026

The 2018 Collioure Chrysopée is a step up over the classic Collioure and has incredible aromatics of iodine, spring flowers, salty minerality, and ripe cherries and framboise fruit. Rich, full-bodied, and ethereally textured, it's another brilliant wine that tastes like the essence of this seaside appellation.

2020 Chrysopee, Collioure Rouge

One of my favorite wines from this incredibly beautiful appellation, the 2020 Collioure Chrysopée is 85% Grenache and 15% Mourvèdre, always from the same parcel, that’s brought up 80% in concrete tanks and 20% in demi-muids. Offering lots of red and blue fruits as well as spice, exotic flowers, and some flinty mineral notes, this beauty is medium to full-bodied, has ripe tannins, and a seamless, incredibly elegant profile. It should drink well right out of the gate, and while I don’t think Collioure are particularly age-worthy, I see no reason this shouldn’t easily have 7-8 years, if not a decade of longevity.

This blend of 90% Grenache and 10% Mourvèdre is grown in the ‘Taillelauque’ lieu-dit, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The brown Cambrian mica schist soils bring a meaty, spice-driven character to the wines.

Violets, spice, candied orange, and both red and blue fruits emerge from the 2019 Côtes Du Roussillon Villages Latour De France Visitare Interiore Terrae (VIT), another rich, full-bodied, yet incredibly elegant vintage for this cuvée. The Syrah component is showing on the nose, but it has plenty of Grenache sexiness on the palate. Unquestionably in the same ballpark as the 2018, this is a gorgeous wine in the making.

The 2020 Côtes Du Roussillon Villages Latour De France Visitare Interiore Terrae is a slightly more Grenache-driven release since 2019, and I think it shows more elegance and purity because of it. All destemmed and aged in a mix of concrete tanks and once-used demi-muids, it offers a beautiful perfume of kirsch and black berry fruits intermixed with more subtle pepper, garrigue, and floral notes. Ripe, medium to full-bodied, and elegant on the palate, it’s going to have plenty of up-front appeal as well as 10-15 years of prime drinking.

v.i.t. stands for 'visitare interiore terrae' - meaning visit the innermost earth' - a part of the mythological motto in finding the philosopher's stone. Here, it represents Michel's search for the best terroir in Côtes-du-Roussillon and finding this 70-year-old vineyard surrounded by garrigue, from which this magnificent blend originates.

While I'm a huge Grenache fan, I always seem to prefer the 100% Syrah R.I. cuvée from this estate, although it's always close. The 2018 Côtes Du Roussillon Villages Lesquerde Rectificando Invenies (RI) reveals a deep purple hue as well as awesome notes of blackberries, blueberries, violets, blood orange, ground pepper, and lavender. These carry to a rich, medium to full-bodied wine with wonderful purity of fruit, silky tannins, no hard edges, and that rare mix of richness and elegance that's the hallmark of great wines. Give this is a decant if drinking any time soon, and it will evolve for 10-15 years. 2020-2035

The other flagship release is the 2020 Côtes Du Roussillon Villages Lesquerde Rectificando Invenies, a more Syrah-dominated blend of 60/40 Syrah to Grenache. Medium to full-bodied, pure, and incredibly well-balanced on the palate, it has a complex nose of dark fruits, peppered meats, and violets to go with a terrific, crushed rock-like sense of minerality. As with the VIT release, the purity of fruit is about as good as it gets.

This north-facing plot known as ‘Fount Del Bessou’, meaning ‘the bottom of the little wood’ in the Occitan language, rests on iron rich granite sands. Its distance from the sea and its altitude tempers the Roussillon's typical Mediterranean climate. This terroir produces elegant wines with mineral, graphite and floral notes.
