Dear <<First Name>>,

Exploring St. Louis on a Sunny Day

A stop on the tour included CityPark Stadium and the art installation "Pillars of the Valley," to honor the Mill Creek Valley neighborhood.

Last Saturday morning was a crisp, clear, and chilly start to the Civitas bus tour, "More than an Arch," but the bus was warm and comfortable with huge windows. Our kind and enthusiastic tour guide, Josiah, endeared himself right away, saying he arrived in St. Louis from Washington state nine years ago for college and stayed because he fell in love with its architecture and history. Josiah shared historical trivia, like the Dutchtown neighborhood named for the Deutsch, or German residents who settled there, not for people from the Netherlands. We saw iconic, old buildings like Bath House No. 6 in Old North St. Louis where residents of that neighborhood bathed from 1937 until 1965 when it closed because over half of the residents finally had indoor plumbing. Josiah pointed out the beautiful Dinks Parrish Laundry building on Olive in Midtown where neighborhood residents once dropped off laundry and had someone else wash it. Even though it was specifically a tour not about the Arch, we heard the story of Percy Green and Richard Daly climbing the Arch in 1964  before its completion, in protest of no African Americans working on its construction crew. Their action resulted in African Americans being hired within 10 days to equal over 10% of the total workers. The Arch also came up in a quick story from Arthur about Walt Disney's plan to build his second Disney park (after Disneyland in California) in downtown St. Louis roughly where the Arch stands today. That plan fell through, possibly because of Disney's refusal to allow Anheuser-Busch to sell beer in the park. Alas, the park was built in Orlando, Florida.

Of course no history of St. Louis is complete without referencing the 1904 World's Fair, but sometimes the 1904 Summer Olympics held here are overlooked. Josiah shared a story of an experiment to withhold water for the Olympic marathon runners to see how dehydration affected their performances. It was a perfect reminder as we headed back to the MO History Museum that we are really lucky to live now vs. reveling in nostalgia a bit too much.

Help Out Metro High School's Model UN Club tomorrow!
Join the Civitas Team at WUMUNS this Fall!
Are you interested in more Model UN experiences? As was true last fall, Civitas will sponsor a team of students at the weekend-long Washington University Model United Nations Symposium October 18th to October 20th, 2024.  WUMUNS offers several different committees for students, including a General Assembly opportunity. Except for the opening ceremony on Friday and closing ceremony on Sunday, delegates spend most of the weekend in their committee. Saturday evening usually offers a social opportunity when all delegates come together. Many school groups travel from all over the country to participate in WUMUNS and several other delegations are from local schools. Civitas prides itself in being a delegation of students from many schools throughout the St. Louis area. We will cover all group and delegate fees, but students must provide their own transportation to and from the Wash U campus and meals for the weekend. Typically the conference begins late Friday afternoon and ends early afternoon on Sunday. Click here to read more about the program.

If you would like to be a part of the Civitas delegation, limited to 12 students, please email Stephanie at gavinstephanie89@gmail.com. We will add you to the delegate list and notify you in the fall when we have more details about the committee choices and schedule times.
