Dear parents,
Sunday Worship: Revelation 17, The Great Prostitute
We want to offer a heads up and equip you in preparation to worship with your children this Sunday, April 21. Our pastors will be preaching on Revelation 17 in corporate worship. In Revelation 17, John speaks of a great prostitute with whom the kings of earth have committed sexual immorality. The prostitute represents the seductions of the world – all the things that tempt mankind to be unfaithful to our one true King, Jesus. You may want to talk to your children ahead of time about this word. One way to describe a prostitute to your children is as one that gives their affections in exchange for money from a stranger rather than giving them lovingly in a faithful covenant marriage*.
In the passage, the prostitute personifies the things of this world that try to draw our love and affection away from the one true God. A prostitute doesn’t care for us and only offers a false love at our expense – we have to pay for it. God’s love for his people is the opposite of this and it is true love. God gives his love to sinners freely, but at great cost to himself. He gave his only Son, Jesus, to die for our sin, so that He might freely welcome us into a faithful and forever covenant marriage relationship with him. Jesus paid the ultimate price so that we would forever be His Bride. He requires no payment in return. This is good news! Encourage your little ones this week that Jesus’ love is what we were made for. He is our true husband and has done all that is necessary to make us his forever.
*Advice from Mary Flo Ridley, founder of Birds & Bees: Parents, gauge your children’s knowledge of sexual information, and respond accordingly, If your children know nothing, then keep it on an affection level…if they know about sexual intimacy between husband and wife you can talk about it in that context.
