How to be Afraid

Rev. Ann Kadlecek
with Liturgist Rene McDonald

We honor the interdependent web of all existence. With reverence for the great web of life and with humility, we acknowledge our place in it.” So begins the definition of “Interdependence” in the proposed revision to Article II. What might humility might have to do with our value of interdependence? Let’s explore together.

If money is an issue and you’d still like to attend, please email me and I will share some special options you can consider.

DARTT BOOKREAD
Necessary Trouble by Drew Gilpin Faust
Tuesday, April 23, 2024, 7:00 - 8:30 pm

Margaret Morrison will lead our discussion of “Necessary Trouble” by Drew Gilpin Faust, an accomplished historian, activist, and the President Emeritus of Harvard University. The book is a coming-of-age memoir; Dr. Faust shares her very personal and human story of how she, a Virginian, a female, and baby boomer fought against the inequities of race and the constraints of gender.  The title of her memoir, “Necessary Trouble,” is a gesture of respect to the late Congressman John Lewis.

We will be focusing the discussion on chapter 7 through “A Note on the Title.”  You are welcome to join in our discussion even if you haven’t read the book.  (There is an NPR interview with Dr. Faust at Harvard's Drew Gilpin Faust reflects on activism in 'Necessary Trouble' : NPR.)

The Zoom link will be sent to all people on the Bookread email list.  If you are not on this list and would like to receive the Zoom link or be added to the DARTT Bookread Mailing List, send an e-mail to dartt@pbuuc.org.

Necessary Trouble is available from local libraries. If you plan to buy it, consider Black-owned/progressive independent bookstores in this area (Busboys and Poets, Loyalty Books, Mahogany Books, Politics and Prose, Sankofa, My Dead Aunt’s Books, Solid State). It is also available on Audible.

SPIRITUALITY CIRCLE

Spirituality Circle meets on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month at 11. Spirituality Circle is one of the many ways we come together at Paint Branch to find, develop, and enhance our sense of belonging in the community. It’s about encouragement and curious exploration of a variety of spiritual practices that connect us with the sacred. We support each other in our individual challenges and pursuits.

We are using a curriculum called “Faith Forward” again. In this series, we are introduced to and asked to “try on” many different spiritual practices. We are asked to ‘keep an open mind and see what comes up for you’. Our bodies and minds mature. The same is true of our spirits. What may not have served us well at one point in our lives, may serve us now. We are encouraged to approach these practices with “new eyes” and a sense of curiosity.

Our next meeting will be April 28thth when we will discuss the spiritual practice of Worship and Ritual. See Session Seven Handouts if possible. Attending previous sessions is not necessary for attending any session but if you want information about them you are encouraged to look at the Handouts available below.

Next Sunday, April 21, 2024, Quest Discussion Group will be meeting via Zoom from 11:45-1:00 pm to read Eve: How the Female Body Drove 200 Million Years of Human Evolution by Cat Bohannon. Please read Chapter 2, Womb.  For any questions, please contact Tess Morrison at tmorriso@illinois.edu.

The Earth Ministry Team is delighted to host a special viewing of the documentary Forks Over Knives (see trailer) on May 3 at 7PM in Bowie, MD (see flyer). An optional dinner is at 5PM. RSVP required: <emt@pbuuc.org>.
