Celebrating New Homes for Maine People with $20 Million of Additional New Funding
Maine Affordable Housing Coalition Asked for this New Funding to build 130+ New Homes starting in 2024
APRIL 18 - Portland, MAINE – Today, the legislature and Governor Janet Mills approved a historic new investment in building new homes for Maine people with $10 million for Maine Housing’s Rural Affordable Rental Housing program, and $10 million for Maine’s Low Income Housing Tax Credit program.
In early February, the Maine Affordable Housing Coalition sought funding for these programs, saying, with Maine needing 84,000 new homes by 2030, there is an “essential need for state subsidy as the catalyst for outside investment to build this affordable housing in Maine. Maine is decades behind in investing in housing.”
“Even in the most trying times, this shows that Maine prioritizes the wellbeing of all Maine people for generations to come, by providing children, seniors and others the foundation for success – a place to call home. We are grateful to our elected officials that know a legacy of building homes that will last for generations of Maine people matters,” said Laura Mitchell, executive director of the Maine Affordable Housing Coalition.
