Practice makes perfect,

or does it?

Dear Parents/Carers

At the end of the summer term, students in years 7-10 will sit their end of year examinations. This is an opportunity for them to test what they know really well and the areas, topics and subject content that they need to work harder on retaining. It is also an opportunity for us to use the results to plan appropriate learning opportunities for students in the next academic year.

As with all examinations, students are expected to do some of the preparation in time outside of lessons – i.e. revision. Just like any other skills (sporting or otherwise), we only get good at something with practice. As such, students need to practice the learning of what they have been taught over and over again until it is clear that its embedded in their long-term memory.

This week and next week assemblies have been focused on the processes of learning, embedding and retrieving information for examination success. This supports what goes on in lessons throughout the academic year.

Ultimately, success in examinations comes down to 2 simple things:

  1. Knowledge retention – remembering what has been taught and transferring it from short to long term memory
  2. Knowledge retrieval – being able to retrieve knowledge form our long-term memory at a time when we need it
Students have and will be reminded constantly of the best ways to retain information and subsequently retrieve it.

There are 4 fundamental processes involved:
  1. Learn the knowledge – this is what happens in lessons, as part of home learning and as the initial element of revision.
  2. Condense the knowledge – there is no way any of us would be able to remember the amount of content taught over a whole year in its ‘raw’ form. This is why we teach students how to condense what they have learnt in to a series of mind map and subsequent flash cards.
  3. Memorise it – This is the most critical part. All the evidence points to the fact that three quarters of revision time should be spent on testing – finding out if you actually ‘know the stuff’ that has been taught/learnt. This can be self-testing – turning over the copy of a mind map and trying to replicate it, as well as others testing you. This could be someone asking the questions on your flash cards.
  4. Retrieving it – Being able to use what you have been taught in context – this is why we make exam questions and tests a regular part of lessons and revision. This is about putting your children in an examination like situation so they become comfortable with it over and over again before they eventually take their GCSE examinations in year 11.

Thank you in advance for what I know with be the support you have and will continue to give to your children so they are successful in their end of year exams and in every other element of school life.

Enjoy the weekend with your children

Regards

The deadline for the Spring Poetry Competition has been extended to next Tuesday 23rd April. Book prizes will be awarded to the top three and the winning entries displayed on our ‘Poetree’ in the Reading Room. Please see poster below for how to enter.

We held another very successful Book Giveaway before the Easter break in the LRC. It is always a delight for Mrs Bailey to see so many students taking a book home to keep, but also borrow from our extensive LRC book collection. Below is an example of some of the books returned this week; evidence of the fantastic variety of reading tastes we have amongst our students.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

At John Hanson Community School we are committed to providing equality of opportunity for all students and staff, and to providing a working environment free from discrimination, prejudice and harassment.

We encourage respect and consideration for others, and recognise and value the school as a safe place for learning. The staff at John Hanson recognise that inequalities exist in all levels of society and believe, that as educators, we have a crucial role to play in eliminating all forms of discrimination, in particular against anyone with any of the protected characteristic. We promote equality by dealing with bullying and incidents of discrimination immediately and by educating the young people in our care through assemblies, tutor time, PSHE day sessions and group work where appropriate.

This is part of our responsibility in preparing our students for life after school.

Important EDI events over the next week:
  • 21st April. Eid-ul-Fitr.
  • 22nd April Earth Day. 23rd April National Shakespeare Day.
  • 23rd April St George's Day.

Words you might not know:

Eid-ul-Fitr: means the festival of breaking the fast. It marks the end of the month of Ramadan. During this time Muslims give thanks to God for giving them the strength to fast for a whole month. Muslims celebrate by wearing their best clothes, decorating thier homes and enjoying time with their fmaily. They eat special foods and attend the mosque for a special sermon from the Imam. For some, they celebrate the whole day and therefore do not go to school or work.

Earth Day is a worldwide event to raise awareness of the environmental issues which face the whole of planet Earth. The Earth Day organisation campaigns on environmental issues worldwide and promotes sustainability and reducing pollution.

World Book Night brings people from all backgrounds together to inspire others to read more. Each year books are donated to to organisations across the UK that can reach people who don't regularly read for pleasure or have access to books.
