Summer season kick-off programming scheduled at Former Governors' Mansion State Historic Site
BISMARCK, N.D. – The Former Governors' Mansion State Historic Site is offering free weekly activities throughout the summer season to promote learning and fun for adults and children. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Cookies and lemonade will be served, unless otherwise noted.
May 28, Brick by Brick, 2-4 p.m. Streets in the city of Bismarck used to be paved in bricks. View the bricks used in Bismarck on exhibit in the carriage house, and decorate your own brick.
May 30, Flowers Are Fantastic, 2-4 p.m. May is a great time to plant flowers. Listen to a story about flowers, and decorate your own flowerpot to show them off.
June 4, Watercolor Wonder, 2-4 p.m. Residents of the Former Governors’ Mansion may have sat outside and used watercolors to paint what they saw around them. Tour the artwork in the Former Governors’ Mansion, and create your own watercolor piece of art.
June 6, Tree Rings, 2-4 p.m. The trees at the Former Governors’ Mansion have been here since the 1920s. Learn how to identify the age of a tree by counting its annual growth rings, and decorate your own tree ring cutting.
June 8, World Wide Knit in Public Day, 1-4 p.m. Knitters, crocheters, spinners, and other fiber artists are welcome to enjoy an outdoor day of socializing and crafting. Meet on the east lawn and bring your own lawn chair or blanket. In case of inclement weather, the event will be moved inside the mansion.
June 11, Screen Printing, 2-4 p.m. The wallpaper in the Former Governors’ Mansion parlor was reproduced through an art technique called screen printing. View the wallpaper in the parlor, and create your own screen print.
June 13, Rock Painting, 2-4 p.m. Come to the mansion to paint or draw on rocks to “plant” throughout the city (with respect to private property) or take home. Rocks and paint will be provided, but participants are also welcome to bring their own.
June 15, Fibers & Flavors, 1-4 p.m. Fiber craft enthusiasts, bring your crochet, knitting, or preferred fiber craft projects to work on in the ambiance of the Former Governors’ Mansion. Sweet tea and cookies will be served.
