MESSAGE FROM THE REV. HELEN S. WHITE
I like this part of the story—the post-Easter part where the disciples and friends of Jesus figure out what to do next. One of my favorite quotes from scripture is Acts 11:17. Peter is speaking to the early church leaders in Jerusalem, defending why he has gone outside of the community and baptized Gentiles. Peter describes a prophetic dream and then a Spirit-led experience which culminates in the baptism of the entire household of a Roman centurion. Defending the newly baptized, Peter says, If then God gave them the same gift that he gave us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could hinder God?
Who was I that I could hinder God? These words were quite meaningful for me when Michael and I were trying to figure out where to go after my seminary graduation back in 2008. At times of insecurity I felt like things had moved too fast—Where are we and what are we doing? Why am I in seminary and where is this leading? Where on earth are we supposed to go now? However, most of the time, it all felt perfectly normal, like we were riding a Spirit-led current. And thus we landed in Savannah. But during those times of insecurity, I gained solace from the stories in Acts—of Peter and Paul trying to ride the Spirit-led current and figure it all out at the same time. It made me know that we worship a living God who is constantly moving and creating things anew in our very midst.
Someone recently asked me what is my favorite part of being a priest. I replied that I truly love the ministry of Children’s Chapel—the planning and leading; the kids and volunteers; our mini-congregation. But I also said that I have loved witnessing Christ Church become a new creation over these last sixteen years. It’s been like watching a child grow into adolescence and adulthood. There are historical traits that remain consistent and true, but the surprise element of who shows up and decides to become a part of our community feels very “Book of Acts” to me. I am continually in awe of the vitality and multi-dimensional nature of who is led to meet God at Christ Church. It’s very exciting to witness and a privilege to help support and nurture. I do really like this part of the story—finding out what the Holy Spirit is up to as we ride the current of our new life in the Risen Christ.

Sunday's music will be led by the Christ Church Choristers and Christ Church Schola. This is the conclusion of the choristers' year, but the program starts back up in August and is open to all aspiring singers entering 3rd–12th grade. Choristers rehearse weekly on Wednesday afternoons and sing for services 6–7 times throughout the '24–'25 year. If you know a child who loves to sing, please get in touch with George Fergus for more information.

In the Spirit: Monday, May 13 at the Sandfly 5-Spot
Second and Fourth Mondays, 5:30 p.m.
"In the Spirit" is a discussion group for those who seek to deepen their faith through meaningful conversations. Join us this Monday at The 5-Spot in Sandfly (7360 Skidaway Rd), where you can grab a drink or a bite as we spend time together. We'll gather at 5:30 p.m. and begin our discussion at 6:00.
This week's topic: Who's Called to Ministry?![](https://mcusercontent.com/5da6420af0ce411d2ce23d0bd/images/dc5658d7-c042-3e97-2e1a-921185c23d6d.jpeg)
All the way in the back of the Book of Common Prayer, there's a Catechism, or "An Outline of the Faith," put into a question-and-answer format. One of the questions is, "Who are the ministers of the Church?" The answer: "The ministers of the Church are lay people, bishops, priests, and deacons." Whether or not you think of yourself as a "minister," the Prayer Book calls you one!
Questions to Ponder:
- How is lay ministry unique among the other ministries? What would be missing without the ministry of lay people?
- What do you think lay ministry is? Is it confined to serving the Church, or does it have a broader scope?
- When do you feel most like a "minister"?
If you have questions or would like to receive emails about upcoming In the Spirit topics, please contact the Rev. Samantha McKean.
