Opening Day Activities Planned at Fort Abercrombie State Historic Site
Fort Abercrombie, N.D. – Fort Abercrombie State Historic Site will open May 25 with summer hours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through Labor Day, Sept. 2.
On opening day, visitors can experience historical military activities from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The 5th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Company D reenactment unit will complete military drills during the day and presentations on the fort grounds at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The 5th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Company D portrays the life and times of soldiers serving at the fort during the battles and siege of Fort Abercrombie in 1862. The public is welcome to participate in the drills to learn about life at the fort from 1858 to 1877.
Opening day will also feature Candace Simar, author of the “Abercrombie Trail” series, signing her new book, "Sister Lumberjack." Allen Quade will demonstrate the craft of blacksmithing in early America. The gallery and Museum Store will be open. Educational guided tours of the site will be available.
Fort Abercrombie is a state historic site managed by the State Historical Society of North Dakota. Summer hours are daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $8 for adults and $3 for youth.
