MESSAGE FROM THE REV. MAX MAXWELL

It’s almost Pentecost, the feast day when we remember the gift of the Holy Spirit to the Apostles. After the Spirit lighted upon them they began to preach the Gospel in Jerusalem. Miraculously, people from all over the world who spoke many different languages were able to understand them. What’s going on here? Were the Apostles really given the ability to speak fluently in languages they’d never studied?

On Pentecost, in some churches I’ve served, the reading from the Book of Acts was read in many different languages. An English speaker would begin and then, one by one, other languages would be heard. In one parish we had English, French, Spanish, German, Polish, Japanese, Thai, and Middle English(!). It was fun, but the cacophony was far from edifying.

We all remember the story of the tower of Babel: at one time, all the people of the earth had one language. They came together and decided to build a city and a tower to reach the heavens. The Lord looked upon this and said, “This is only the beginning of what they will do; nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them.” So the Lord “confused” their language so that they could not understand each other, and he scattered them across the face of the earth. This explains why people speak so many different languages.

The story of Pentecost is not primarily about the Apostles becoming multi-lingual. It’s the response to the story of the tower of Babel. It’s about the fact that the Gospel of Jesus Christ can unite the world. The message of the Gospel can end our “confusion” and teach us the truth that we are all one. In fact, I believe that not only are we humans one, but that we are one with all creation. In the longer ending of the Gospel of Mark, Jesus tells the disciples, “Go into all the world and proclaim the good news to the whole creation" (emphasis added).

May the Holy Spirit lead us into unity with each other and the world.

He will articulate H&H's philosophy toward organ building, dive into their process from start to finish when they take on a new project, and discuss the organ to be installed at Christ Church in 2026.
