Sunday, May 5 is the Pittsburgh Marathon.
We will have live worship in our beautiful Sanctuary. We welcome you to make your way to church on foot, bike, or otherwise, but please consult the map for the course boundaries since we are within its boundaries.
Do Unitarian Universalists have a tradition of forgiveness and reconciliation? What might we learn from other faiths? What spiritual practices might we learn to welcome in our lives as we let go of hurt?
Rev. Dr. Kate Walker
The Share the Plate Recipient for May is Tree Pittsburgh
Tree Pittsburgh works across Allegheny County to plant and care for trees where they are needed the most. As the impacts of climate change grow, it is imperative that we help communities to be more resilient to heat and increased rainfall. By planting trees we not only provide cooling shade and capture stormwater runoff, but we bring beauty and wildlife habitat to areas often dominated by concrete. Donations to Tree Pittsburgh will directly impact communities with low tree canopy, supporting education programs, tree planting, and ongoing tree maintenance. Tree Pittsburgh relies heavily on volunteer support – please visit www.treepittsburgh.org to learn more about the organization and ways to get involved.

From your Art committee
The work of Rahil Sabraei, who talked to us via Zoom a couple of weeks ago, will hang in the Undercroft Gallery through the end of this month. Her work in the ancient Tazhib style (with gold paint) is exquisite. If you want a piece for your own see Ali Masaladhen during coffee hour.

Speaker: Nuhu Osman Attah
Title: The Work of Art in the Age of Automated Production
Description:
The title of this talk is an allusion to a philosophical essay from the last century observing the rise of technology like the camera and other means of “mechanical reproduction”. The author realized a sea change was in the offing for art and all our notions of creativity, the beautiful, and the meaningful. Today, we find ourselves in the same boat — the technology, AI, is vastly different, and the ideas are also very different, but the effects are equally revolutionary and equally worth our philosophical attention.
Speaker bio: I am a doctoral candidate in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Pittsburgh where I am currently completing a dissertation on the philosophical and cognitive scientific issues raised by large language models (like ChatGPT). My primary area of research is in the foundations of cognitive science, philosophical issues in artificial intelligence and machine learning, and philosophy of mind. In addition to foundational conceptual issues touching on AI systems, I am also interested in their ethical, scientific, and existential ramifications.
