MESSAGE FROM THE REV. SAMANTHA K. MCKEAN
Do you remember your high school graduation? For me, a few details come to mind: the metal folding chairs heated by the sun on the football field, the band wheezing out “Pomp and Circumstance” on an eternal loop, my white dress (selected in a panic the weekend before) too itchy under my graduation gown. But what I remember better than any concrete detail is a feeling: that sense of an open horizon, of wide-open possibility. My life could become anything, I remember thinking. I didn’t know what was going to come next, but whatever it was, it was about to start. I couldn’t wait.
During Sunday’s service, we will take time to recognize, honor, and bless the graduating high school seniors in our midst. They are about to step off into that big wide something, with various destinations and dreams and unknowns ahead of them. While their paths will almost certainly differ from mine and yours, a few commonalities seem inevitable. They will try new things. They will make mistakes. They will discover some things that they love, and other things that they can’t stand. They will meet people who will stay in their lives forever. And they will learn a whole lot about who they are along the way.
These discoveries will be equal parts exhilarating, discombobulating, joy-filled, and hard—which is why we send them out with God’s blessing. The blessing is an assurance that even when it’s 2 a.m. and the paper’s not finished, God’s love and goodwill toward them is still the defining feature of their life.
We all could use this assurance. We might not be standing on the brink of such obvious adventures, but the truth is that every day ahead of us is still an unknown. We never can fully predict or control what we will face, who we will meet, or how our lives will be changed. But still, God’s love and goodwill toward us remains, steady and constant, highlighting the highs and cushioning the lows. When it’s 2 a.m. and the baby won’t stop crying, when we discover the joy of a new friendship, when we get the phone call we were hoping would never come—wherever we go, God's love follows us and meets us there.
This is why our Sunday worship often ends with words like these: May the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, but upon you and remain with you always. Amen.

Join us each second Thursday in the undercroft as we explore insights from thought-provoking works. This month's selection is BlackWorld, by Bertice Berry. BlackWorld is real and exists in the corner of heaven, but unlike other heavenly realms, BlackWorld was created by the ancestors; those who'd been stolen from Africa and brought to the Americas. With the assistance and guidance of Aziz, the attendant on Rose's private jet, Rose will discover BlackWorld, and unlock the secrets of our past, present and future.

Reflections on Easter: Theme and Variations
9:30 a.m. Adult Forum in the Chapel
April 7–May 12
Join us in the chapel during the Easter season as we discover the wonderful variations found in the life-changing theme of Easter. Borrowing a concept from musical compositions, we will begin with one theme: Easter. Different Easter stories from Scripture will be shared, and we will listen each week as a new variation flows forth and transforms us. Variations include forgiveness, reconciliation, joy, and peace.
