The Path of Love

with Liturgist Andy McIntire

According to the proposed revision of Article II of the Unitarian Universalist bylaws (which will be voted on at General Assembly next month), “Love is the power that holds us together and is at the center of our shared values.” What might it mean for us to center that power? What is the path of Love?

The “Good Good-bye”:   A Note from Your Minister
May 3, 2024

After three years of an eventful, productive, shared developmental ministry, we’re approaching the time when you and I will say goodbye.

There are many feelings around this farewell – even just within me.  I know, intellectually, that it’s the right time and that you are going be just fine.  But I have come to care deeply about you and your church and I am going to miss you.

There’s a continuum of approaches to saying goodbye.  On one end, there’s the dragged-out farewell, where it gets over-complicated or we keep finding more things to say or do to postpone the finality (kind of a grown-up version of refusing to being the first to hang up the phone).  On the other end, there’s slipping out the back door and avoiding the moment entirely.

As we approach our goodbye, we’re trying for a healthy middle ground.

My last day in the pulpit will be June 30.  I’ve saved up most of this year’s vacation and study leave time for July 1-31, so (unless there’s a crisis in July) June 30 will be our last day together.  An event celebrating Paint Branch’s first three years of developmental ministry is scheduled for June 30, after the service.

But before then, I’m hoping to meet with as many of you as possible, so we can say our own goodbye.  We might also reflect on these last three years together – all that our shared ministry accomplished, all that we learned, and what is on your heart as you move into the future.  Since I will be following best practices and avoiding contact with you for two years after my departure, this will our chance to say what we want to say to each other, as part of our “good goodbye.”

If you’d like to meet, please send me an email at minister@pbuuc.org and we’ll find a time and a format that works for you.

I look forward to our conversation!

- Rev. Ann

Next Sunday, May 5, 2024 Quest Discussion Group will be meeting via Zoom from 11:45-1:00pm to read Eve: How the Female Body Drove 200 Million Years of Human Evolution by Cat Bohannon. Please finish Chapter 3, Perception.  For any questions, please contact Tess Morrison at tmorriso@illinois.edu.

DARTT BOOKREAD
Poverty, by America
by Matthew Desmond

Tuesday, May 14, 2024, 7:00 - 8:30 pm

“Why?  Why all this poverty?  To understand the causes of poverty, we must look beyond the poor.  Those of us living lives of privilege and plenty must examine ourselves.  Are we - we the secure, the insured, the housed, the college-educated, the protected, the lucky - connected to all this suffering?  This is a book about poverty that is not just about the poor.  Instead, it's a book about how the other other half lives, about how some lives are made small so that others may grow.”

Sue Bollens will lead the discussion.  Please read the Prologue through Chapter 5. You are welcome to join in our discussion even if you haven’t read the book.

The Zoom link will be sent to all people on the Bookread email list.  If you are not on this list and would like to receive the Zoom link or be added to the DARTT Bookread Mailing List, send an e-mail to dartt@pbuuc.org.

Poverty, by America is available from local libraries. If you plan to buy it, consider Black-owned/progressive independent bookstores in this area (Busboys and Poets, Loyalty Books, Mahogany Books, Politics and Prose, Sankofa, My Dead Aunt’s Books, Solid State). It is also available on Audible.

SPIRITUALITY CIRCLE

Spirituality Circle meets on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month at 11. Spirituality Circle is one of the many ways we come together at Paint Branch to find, develop, and enhance our sense of belonging in the community. It’s about encouragement and curious exploration of a variety of spiritual practices that connect us with the sacred. We support each other in our individual challenges and pursuits.

We are using a curriculum called “Faith Forward” again. In this series, we are introduced to and asked to “try on” many different spiritual practices. We are asked to ‘keep an open mind and see what comes up for you’. Our bodies and minds mature. The same is true of our spirits. What may not have served us well at one point in our lives, may serve us now. We are encouraged to approach these practices with “new eyes” and a sense of curiosity.

Our next meeting will be April 28thth when we will discuss the spiritual practice of Worship and Ritual. See Session Seven Handouts if possible. Attending previous sessions is not necessary for attending any session but if you want information about them you are encouraged to look at the Handouts available below.
