A Note from Mother Andrea
Beloved Ones,
This Sunday is the last Sunday of Easter. For 50 days, we have been in Easter or Paschal Tide, celebrating the Resurrection of Christ. There is continued debate about the origin of its name. Which narrative are you most familiar with? The Venerable Bede in the 8th century wrote that it was adapted from “Eosterae”, the pagan Anglo-Saxon goddess of spring. Newer scholarship indicates it is derived from the German “Ostern,” then made its way to Old English.[1] Others claim it is from the Old English “East” for the sun’s rising in the east, filling the world with light at dawn.[2] Even as the sun rose, the Son of God arose from the dead, bringing light to the world. And other scholars hold it is from the Latin, “in alba” meaning dawn. Fortunately, the etymology of “Paschal”, for Pascal tide and the Paschal Candle is more easily traced to its Latin and Greek root for Passover, “Pascha”.[3]
Do you love the special things we do during Paschal Tide to remember and celebrate the Resurrection? I really do. There is the gold that highlights the rein of Christ, the asperges with the differing collects, the scent of this particular incense, the way we stand during the Eucharist, and receive the tripartite Easter blessing as Mass ends. So, this Sunday, I invite you to embrace everything in the liturgy that celebrates the season for one last time. It is a gift made possible first by Christ, then the work of so many to enable us to share the Good News to a world in need of hope.
Easter Blessings,
Mother Andrea

Wear Red for Pentecost!
May 19
Red is the color of excitement, energy, power, and passion, and as such, it is the color of the Holy Spirit. It calls to mind the flames that descended on the Church on the Day of Pentecost, which is why red is the liturgical color for the Feast of Pentecost.
On May 19, we invite you to don your favorite red shirt, slip on some red shoes, or pin a red bloom to your lapel to mark this holy day.
Let's fill the church with red this Pentecost!

SAVE THE DATE for the next book discussion in the Anti-Racism Committee's series "Understanding Racism One Book at a Time"!
We will be gathering after Mass on Sunday, May 19 to discuss The Cross and the Lynching Tree by James H. Cone. Evan Sherar will be leading the discussion.
The cross and the lynching tree are the two most emotionally charged symbols in the history of the African American community. In this powerful work, theologian James H. Cone explores these symbols and their interconnectedness in the history and souls of Black folk.
James Cone was an advocate of Black liberation theology, a theology grounded in the experience of African Americans, and related to other Christian liberation theologies. In 1969, his book Black Theology and Black Power provided a new way to articulate the distinctiveness of theology in the Black church. Cone's work was influential and political from the time of its first publication and remains so to this day. It has been both utilized and critiqued inside and outside of the African American theological community.

Join Us As We Celebrate
the Life and Work of Pauli Murray!
The Diocesan celebration of Pauli Murray, organized by the Diocesan Racial Justice and Education Team (RJET), will be held Saturday, June 29th, and will be hosted by All Saints Parish.
We are honored to have Ms. Rosita Stevens-Holsey, Pauli Murray's niece, as our guest and speaker. She will speak at 3:00 PM in the church, followed by a celebration of the Eucharist at 4:00 PM. A reception in the rear of the church will follow.
Pauli Murray was an amazing woman, honored on our calendar of holy people on July 1st. She was a black woman, a woman who struggled with her gender identity, a woman who fought to attend law school, and then later in her life, felt a call to the priesthood at a time when women priests were still unusual. Her work in the early civil rights movement laid the foundation for Thurgood Marshall and many who came after her.
All are strongly encouraged to attend, to honor Pauli Murray by hearing about her life from her niece.
