WEEKLY NOTES

May 9, 2024

Greetings Saint Paul's Friends and Family,

Our big news this week is that our history (and future) making General Conference has come and gone. It was quite a blessing to be in the space and to experience our denomination at work. It was also a wonderful blessing to hear Pastor MaryAnn represent us well on WTXL, as she shared a thoughtful response on some of the big decisions that were made.  In the words of our incoming President of the Bishop’s Council, Bishop Tracy Smith Malone, our “United Methodist church is a worldwide, diverse Church. We are deeply rooted in scripture, we believe in a generous unity, we celebrate our cultural and theological differences…. Together, we bear witness to the love, grace, teachings and example of Jesus Christ! All to the glory of God!”

Our additional BIG news this week is that our very own District Superintendent, Rev. Clarke Campbell-Evans, will be preaching this Sunday, May 12th!  Woooohoooooo!!

We hope you are as excited as we are!!!

Your pastors, Latricia and MaryAnn

Guest Preacher This Sunday

We are excited to have our District Superintendent, Rev. Clarke Campbell-Evans, join us on Sunday, May 12th as our guest preacher.

This schedule is good thru Sunday, May 19th. Please see below for our Summer Sunday schedule

The 11:00 service is live-streamed on Facebook, YouTube and on our website

Time Change!

Reception for Simon Webb

Sunday, June 2nd- after combined service

Please make plans to join us as we celebrate the retirement of our beloved sexton, Simon Webb. This event will take place after our 9:30am worship service .   A love offering is currently being collected for Simon; if you wish to donate, please have your offering in no later than May 22nd.

We will also be collecting cards for Simon, so please write him a note to express your thanks and bring it with you to the reception on June 2nd.

Donations for IRC (International Rescue Committee)

IRC is currently accepting clothes (in good condition), household items (small), and cleaning supplies. There is a donation box marked “For Refugees” in the Missions room in the Education building (room 308)

CAJM Celebration

Tuesday, May 14th at 6:00pm- at Temple Israel- 2215 Mahan Dr

Thank you to all our Saint Paul’s members and friends who came out to support our Capital Area Justice Ministry requests at the NEHEMIAH ACTION event last month!  Over sixty (60!) of us attended and expressed our support for new policies to build more affordable housing for our neighbors and to interrupt gun violence.  Please come celebrate our justice next Tuesday, May 14 at 6:00pm at Temple Israel.  You can RSVP using the button below and car pool from Saint Paul's at 5:30 pm or meet us at Temple Israel.  We hope everyone who attended the NEHEMIAH event or wanted to will come and celebrate.

Church Office Volunteers Needed

Due to summer vacations and retirements, we are in need of additional substitutes and one permanent volunteer (Wednesdays, 1pm-4pm ) at our church office front desk. Our tasks are enjoyable. We answer the phone, transfer calls or take messages for the staff. We greet guests and assist the Ministers and staff as needed. Volunteer days are Monday thru Thursday and shift times are 9am-1pm or 1pm-4pm. The staff and I look forward to seeing you.  Please contact Janet Clark at 850-950-8449 or Linda Fletcher in the office at 850-385-5146

United Women in Faith- Annual Luncheon

Tuesday, May 14th at 11:00am

Please note the time change for the May meeting. This program will be our annual May luncheon. Please bring a salad or dessert to share. All women of the church are welcome to join us. Contact Peggy Harter if you have any questions- 850-339-1356 or harterp97@gmail.com

***All reservations need to be in by noon on Monday each week***

Men’s Study Fellowship

All men are invited to a study fellowship, a "reading community", Tuesdays 8:30am at Ology Northside, Kerry Forest Parkway. We are now reading CASTE:  The Origin of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson.

"The Pulitzer Prize-winning author examines the unspoken caste system that has shaped America and shows how our lives today are still defined by a hierarchy of human divisions."

Contact David Gill (352-223-2759) if you have any further questions.

Hello from Leslie!

Happy almost-end of school!

As we get closer to summer, I'm sure you're getting excited about all the fun activities we have planned. We've got so many things going on, from VBS to Extreme Explorers, and I don't want you to miss out. If you would like to participate in any of these activities, make sure you sign up soon!

I also wanted to remind you about the Child and Youth Protection Policy Training on Wednesday, May 22nd, after Wednesday Night Dinner. This is such an important training if you volunteer in any aspect of our Children's Ministries. It's what helps make our church a safe and happy place for families. So, please make plans to attend, (and sign up for dinner beforehand if you don't want to worry about cooking).

Finally, we're moving to one morning worship service at 9:30 AM on Sundays at the end of May. Therefore our Sunday School hour will shift to after worship, from 10:45 to 11:45. We will combine all elementary-age classes into one for the summer. All rising Kindergarten through rising fifth graders will be in the big room on the foundation level. This also means we will be needing adult volunteers to teach each Sunday. Sunday School in the summer is easy, fun, and a great way to get involved in our children's ministries. Please let me know if you're interested, and I'll give you all the details about our summer Sunday school class.

See you soon at church!

Blessings,

Leslie Scott
