Is US Congress Having a YIMBY moment?
The housing activists known as YIMBYs have spent most of the past decade fighting their battles at the state and local levels, pushing to loosen strict zoning rules they argue have led to a national home affordability crisis. But now, the movement may be quietly inching closer to its biggest win yet on Capitol Hill, complete with a namesake bill. Last week, the House Financial Services Committee unanimously approved the bipartisan YIMBY Act. Read more.
MAHC Signs Support for new Federal Reducing Regulatory Barriers to Housing Act
MAHC support forthcoming legislation proposed by Sen. Fetterman (D-PA) and Rep. Blunt Rochester (D-DE-AL), that will enable more communities to eliminate restrictive zoning, modernize land use policies, and streamline approvals — boosting housing supply and meeting the needs of millions of Americans. The bill:
Directs HUD to develop model zoning legislation for state and local governments can utilize voluntarily to boost housing production.
Provide technical assistance and best practices to local governments to implement zoning and land-use reforms.
Fund the national expansion of the National Zoning Atlas and provide grants for localities to develop pre-approved building plans for small and medium multifamily housing to streamline production.

Portland Zoning Overhaul - Provide Input
The city is nearing the end of a seven-year process to redo its entire zoning ordinance, which dictates everything from where and how parks, schools, businesses and housing can be built, to how tall those developments can be. It's called ReCode and the final proposal is scheduled to go before the City Council this fall. Those leading the effort say it's about letting Portland grow well, and lines up with the city's comprehensive plan. Like many other cities in the U.S., Portland is on track to get rid of single-family zoning, allowing at least duplexes, triplexes and quadruplexes in all areas of the city. Take a look at the proposed changes and our Q&A on the basics before the series of public meetings to be held next week at 1 Canal Plaza – on Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
