Portuguese Citizens: Now Eligible for E-1 Treaty Trader and E-2 Treaty Investor Visa
On May 3, 2024, the U.S. Embassy in Lisbon announced the full implementation of the Advancing Mutual Interests and Growing our Success (AMIGOS) Act, signed by President Joseph Biden in December 2022.
The AMIGOS ACT is designed to facilitate business and commerce, through a non-immigrant category new for Portuguese nationals, the E1/E2 trade and investment visas.
E-1 and E-2 Visas allow individuals to enter the United States to conduct “substantial trade” or invest a “substantial amount of capital,” respectively. The E-2 visa is granted to foreign nationals who invest a substantial amount of capital in the U.S. Both E-1 and E-2 visas are available only to nationals of countries that have a treaty of commerce and navigation with the U.S.
Portuguese citizens are now eligible for E-1 and E-2 visas in the United States, provided that Portugal offers reciprocal nonimmigrant status to U.S. nationals.
Effective April 23, 2024, eligible Portuguese citizens have been able to apply for these visas.
