May 2024

With temperatures on the rise in Central Texas, there is no doubt you’ve seen more two-wheeled commuters on and along the roads. The month of May brings a dual celebration of two-wheeled mobility: Bike Month and Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. At the Mobility Authority, we are excited to join the nationwide movement to promote cycling and enhance motorcycle safety awareness.

Bike Month: Pedal Towards a Better Tomorrow

Throughout May, communities across the country come together to celebrate the joy and benefits of cycling. From reducing carbon emissions, to improving personal health and fostering community connections, cycling offers benefits for individuals and our planet alike.

Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month: Ride Smart

At the Mobility Authority, safety is a top priority, and Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month serves as an important reminder to two-wheeled riders and drivers to share the road responsibly and take steps to prevent accidents.

Whether you are a driver or a cyclist, follow these valuable tips and resources to help riders stay safe on the road:

Cyclists
  1. Protect yourself. If you’re riding, always wear a helmet.
  2. Being seen = Being safe. Wear high-visibility gear that protects your body. Your arms and legs should be completely covered, boots and shoes should be high enough to cover your ankles, and wearing gloves protects your hands and provides a better grip.
  3. Check UP before you shift DOWN. Is your two-wheeled vehicle maintenance up to speed?  Run through a maintenance checklist before you hit the road.
  4. Ride smart and sober. It’s never worth the risk.
  5. Commit to safe riding. Complete a two-wheeled rider education and training course for a safer riding experience.
Drivers
  1. Be on the lookout. As a driver, always check your blind spots for two-wheeled vehicles on the roads.
  2. Maintain a safe following distance. Keep a distance of at least three to four seconds between your vehicle and the two-wheeled vehicle in front of you to allow for sudden stops or maneuvers.
  3. Use your turn signals. Signaling your intentions in advance gives everyone time to react accordingly.
  4. Be mindful at intersections. Intersections are high-risk areas for accidents. Look carefully for approaching vehicles before turning left or right.
  5. Avoid distractions. Pay close attention to your surroundings and avoid distractions such as texting, eating, or adjusting the radio while driving.
